Missionary Bay is located off Onapua Bay which is in turn off Tory Channel in the Marlborough Sounds. Here is a list of bays in the Marlborough Sounds. The area is near Picton in New Zealand and is called the Queen Charlotte Sounds. The Bay is named after the Rev Samuel Ironside who in the 1840's used to leave his whaling boat there. You can see the small beach to the right of the photo below where he used to leave it. Look at the map of the area. View a picture of Onapua Bay. Also Look at some of the Hector Dolphins that frequent the area. Have a look at the area through the eyes of an early 19th century artist of Tory Channel. Also look at Queen Charlotte Sound looking back towards Picton. Can you imagine the silence of the early morning interrupted only by the lap of the waves and the Tui. The bays provide a wonderful echo effect and is erie in its solitude. |
