The Company was incorporated on 3 August 1968 under the name of The Singapore Drydocks and Engineering Co (Pte) Ltd to take over the activities of the former Dockyard Department of the Port of Singapore Authority from 1 September 1968. In 1968 it changed its name to Keppel Shipyard (Pte) Ltd, to Keppel Shipyard Ltd when it became a public company in 1975 and to Keppel Corpn Ltd in 1986.
The Company had been principally engaged in a wide range of shiprepair, shipbuilding and marine related activities. Subsequent to a series of acquisitions, the Company's principal activity is now that of an investment holding and management company. The Group is now very diversified with activities also in offshore oil-rig construction, energy and engineering, property development and management, banking and financial services, telecommunications and transportation and shiprepair, shipbuilding and marine related activities.
The Group has 14 public-listed companies (including the Company) in Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines.
FY00 turnover Offshore, energy and engineering 53.9%, banking/financial services 26.2%, property investment, development and management 9.1%, marine 7.2%, telecom and transportation 3.6%.
1HFY01 profit rose 21%, boosted by higher revenue from all units except its property arm. Keppel Corp 2H01 to be boosted by exceptional profit of $800m from the disposal of Keppel Corporation Limited.
