I'm pretty willing to watch any kind of soccer, but my favorite are the English Premier League. My favorite Premier League team is Aston Villa. I've developed a liking for the MLS (Major League Soccer), especially since there's the local team, the San Jose Eathquakes (nee Clash). I'm really excited about the inagural season now underway for the WUSA (Women's United Soccer Association) and the local team, the Bay Area CyberRays. My two favorite players are Jovan Kirovski and Carla Overbeck. There are a lot of other players that I think are pretty great, like Landon Donovan, Claudio Reyna, Eric Wynalda, Mia Hamm, Michelle Akers, Joy Fawcett, Julie Foudy, Pete Vagenas, Sasha Victorine, Alexi Lalas, Josh Wolff, Ronaldo (Brazil), and Jorge Campos (Mexico), and Charmaine Hooper (Canada) to name a few. Soccer is the best sport in the world. It's the easiest sport to learn, but probably the most difficult to master. But the simplicity of what Pele calls the "beautiful game" is probably its greatest appeal around the world. The World Cup (Men's France '98, Women's USA '99, Korea/Japan 2002) is probably the most watched and anticipated sporting event in the world. |

It's a drag that the only way to get to watch soccer often is having cable, but that hopefully won't be the case much longer. The occasional network and even cable television coverage is somewhat scant and the commentators may not be on the ball as the Coupe du Monde coverage showed, but at least it's soccer. Spanish-language stations like Univision are also good bets for quality coverage. Don't forget to watch the MLS on Soccer Saturdays all season, with games on ESPN, ESPN2 or ABC. And watch the WUSA on TNT on Saturdays. |
