This is the place if you want to find out your Chinese zodiac sign, and find out about the signs of the
guys in 'N Sync!
Way back when, when I first heard that A.J. McLean of the Backstreet Boys got a tattoo "in honor" of his Chinese zodiac sign, I remember there was a lot of confusion as to what the tattoo was of. Some people said it was a snake or something serpentine; others said it was a dragon. It turns out that he did get a dragon tattoo on his back - and it is his Chinese zodiac sign although he was born in 1977 (which caused a lot of people to think he was a snake).
This page, I hope, clears up some of that confusion. Those years posted on the placemat of your favorite Chinese restaurant could be wrong IF your birthday is in January or February. The Chinese zodiac is based on the lunar and not the solar (i.e. the Romanized 364/365 day) calendar. Thus, some years Chinese New Year will be in January; other years it will be sometime in February. In short, any birthday between March and December can follow the "simple" rules listed on those Chinese zodiac placemats, but may or may not correctly indicate someone's zodiac sign if they are born in January or February. See the chart below to find your sign. (The dates are in MM/DD/YY American date format.) If you can't
find your birthday within one of the date ranges below, you need to consult someone who has a lunar almanac. Many
thanks to my dad, who has one of these books and was nice enough to write out the dates for me, since it's in Chinese
and I couldn't read it *grin*. Hey, I understand and can speak the language, but when it comes to
reading and writing it...)
Some random myths about the calendar and what some Chinese people believe:
- the rabbit is considered to be the luckiest sign of all. they are also believed to be
the most intelligent.
- in particular, sheep are supposed to be the most artistic, creative, and aesthetic (I'm a direct contradiction, LOL)
- horses are supposed to be very social, gregarious, and attractive to the opposite sex
- rats are supposed to be diligent but stubborn
- dragons are supposed to be attention-seeking and ambitious (gee, does this fit J.C. or Joey or what?)
- 8 is a lucky number - and the year 1988 is especially lucky, because it is the "year of the
white dragon." I found this interesting since 'N Sync on their last tour wore Tommy Hilfiger jerseys
with the number "88" on them.
- related to that "8" thought - August 8th is Father's Day in China (someone should tell
J.C. this if and when he becomes a father *grin*)
- in general, odd numbers are luckier than even ones. My mom told me this, saying nothing in the world
is ever perfect.
- if you read most Chinese horoscopes, it says your perfect match 3 signs away from you (that is, for example,
I'm a sheep, so three away from that would be the dragon (!!!) and the dog).
- please remember that this is only for fun, so please don't freak out if you don't match
up with your favorite 'N Syncer, okay?
