In
addition, the third annual FACES Recognition Award for Outstanding
Environmental Performance will be awarded and we will unveil the new computer
presentation developed by our own Lana Brodziak.
Even
if you are not presently a FACES member please join us for an informative
evening.
Minutes of the Annual
Meeting, July 21, 2004
CEO Pat Flynn called the meeting to order at 7:10 p.m. at the Sea
Education Association Campus, Falmouth.
A quorum was confirmed by Treasurer Peter Gallerani.
The minutes of the 2003 Annual Meeting were
distributed and approved.
Pat Flynn gave a brief overview of the year’s
activities and then informed the membership that she will be stepping down as her
full time job and other activities do not permit her to continue. She thanked the Board for their support and
wished them luck in the coming years.
The Treasurer’s Report was distributed at check-in
and Peter Gallerani asked if there were any questions concerning the
report. Hearing none the Report was
approved.
The FACES Environmental Leadership Award was
presented by Pat Flynn to Carl E. Breivogel “For his tireless devotion to
safeguarding all of Falmouth’s herring runs and his foresight in helping to
preserve Falmouth’s precious open space and natural heritage”. After accepting the plaque and jacket, Carl
gave a brief talk on his background and why he felt so passionate about the
environment and in particular the herring runs.
Jack Barnes gave a presentation on the Falmouth
Ashumet Plume Citizens Committee activities which mostly dealt with the
Falmouth Friendly Lawn Program and the Seal of Approval Program. Jack explained the Seal of Approval Program
and stated that 79 organizations had signed up for the program and that Honor
Roll Posters were being made and would be distributed in the coming weeks to
all recipients and throughout the Town.
Hila Lyman then discussed the other Falmouth
Friendly Lawn activities including a seminar for Landscapers in February at
WBNERR and a new Ecological Landscaping on Cape Cod brochure which was
developed jointly by the Falmouth Garden Club, the League of Woman Voters and
WBNERR. In addition, the 2005 version
of the Falmouth Friendly Lawn brochure was unveiled.
Lana Brodziak unveiled the new presentation she
developed concerning FACES and the environmental issues that Falmouth is facing
with regards to the deterioration of the water quality in our coastal
ponds. The presentation was made
possible by a grant from the Sholley Foundation.
Dr. Bob Duncanson, Director, Health and Environment,
Town of Chatham was the guest speaker.
As Chatham had received the first Estuaries Report and Falmouth is due
to receive their first three reports this fall, Bob’s talk was entitled “What
Can Falmouth Learn form Chatham’s Experience with the State’s Estuaries
Report”. The presentation was an eye
opener for many as the target nitrogen levels that Chatham is going to have to
meet are most challenging. At this
point in time Chatham has more questions than answers.
Amy Lowell, Falmouth WasteWwater Superintendent
followed up with a brief presentation on where Falmouth stands with waste water
planning. Amy and Bob are on the same
County commission concerning waste water issues so we can learn a lot from
Chatham’s experience. Amy announced
that the Selectmen will be holding a joint meeting with the Planning Board,
Health Board and herself on August 16 to continue Falmouth’s waste water
planning process. It will be televised on
FCTV so she urged everyone to tune in.
At the end of her presentation, President, Brad Stumcke committed to her
that Faces will be there to support her in reaching out to the residents of
Falmouth as the Town develops its plans for waste water treatment.
