I Knocked ……… the roses opened the window

Where is she? … confused,  it didn’t answer

“She died” ……. Why would you tell?

You And I , You and I

Alone, we shall cry

You and I , OH roses

Alone……..

In a cold night

The beautiful girl told us a tale

Do remember how long it went ……. ?

She said………….. I am beautiful

And the tale ended here

And I knocked on the window years after

It opened

How come ?

You are still here ?

It said ……… she taught me

The most beautiful of them all ……

If I ever left

To leave a scent in this world

Said Akl

This song is found in the CDs of the play “ Nas Min Warak” (Paper people)

Said Akl wrote the Lyrics, The Rahbani Brothers made the music, and Fairouz sand the song, and we are still enchanted until today by this great innovative marvelous piece of art.

Like every time Said Akl writes a song for Fairouz, there is a hidden jewel inside, a mysterious surrealistic poem, where, in few words, said Akl tells the story of a life time, of Love, and of the period after love.

A poem written by a male, who once loved a girl, who used to come and wait for her at that window, to see her beauty, to see her shining from within the roses, that moment used to make his day. And one day, he came and she was not there, the fading roses told him that she has died, there were the only one to weep her departure, because she was his own, now that he was her lover. And after years and years, he came back, as a pilgrim to take a last look at the place where his lover used to be. He expected to find emptiness, yet, there were still memories and roses, telling him what his love used to tell him, “if you ever had to leave, don’t forget to leave behind you a beautiful memory, let your remembrance be as beautiful as the scent of a rose, don’t pass by this life like a nothing, remember to leave your mark, like a rose.

A male is supposed to be telling this story, yet, it is a female that is performing this poem, and not any female, Fairouz, the singer, and the actress, who, with the help of the well knit music, was able to perform the whole pure love scene, and take us miles away in place and time, to a magical place, where death is as beautiful as the scent of a rose, where there is no death, no pain, no sorrow.

And when we take a close look, we find that this song can never be performed by any one other than Fairouz. And the sorrow fills our heart when look at this smart, beautiful, wise, love song, with the most gorgeous lyrics ever, and we find out that no song these days can reach this level, and instead of going forward, the Arabic music and poetry is walking backwards. Where are the good lyricists? Where are the good musicians? Where are the good singers? Isn’t it time to choose not to listen to bad Music, and to tell the world that “We DO NOT Listen to bad music” that bad music is not a good merchandise? And that music should never be a merchandise?
