An Ordinary South African Family - The Bolton's

Welcome to our home page.

I am Christel (41) and Mike (44) is my husband.

First a little about me.This is what I look like.

Christel a few years ago.

I was born in Cape Town, in 1957. My parents are German and originally came out to South Africa for two years only, but then got stuck here.

When I was nine years old, my one brother was born and two years later was followed by another brother. My 12 years of school were spent at The German School in Cape Town, after which I started training in Medical Technology. I then qualified in Blood Transfusion Technology and worked at the Western Province Blood Transfusion Service from 1976 until 1987.

In 1982 I travelled through Europe for three months. Those were the days when the US$ equalled the Rand. Now we have to pay R6.00 for 1US$! Times have sure changed.

During my school years I played quite a bit of Tennis, but unfortunately that petered out once I started work, as work involved shiftwork – with week end duties, public holiday duties as well as night duty.

In October 1983 I met Mike. This meeting was organised by a friend of mine, who thought the two of us were suited to each other!

Now a bit about Mike

Mike

Mike a few years ago.

Mike was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa in 1954. At 18 months of age the family moved to Port Elizabeth where Mike did his schooling and went to university. His father was a building teacher. Mike is the youngest of four children; in fact his oldest brother is 16 years older than he is. So, in a sense Mike was an only child, as his siblings had already left home when he was in his teenage years. In 1983 he accepted a job in Cape Town, as an accountant with a fishing company, which was right up his street as fishing has always been his main hobby. In his younger years, Mike played cricket and hockey, and for the latter earned his provincial colours.

As I have already mentioned, we met in 1983, we became engaged in April 1985 and got married in December ’85.This means that we have been married for 13 years.

Just Married! Oh to have that figure again!

Our Children

Here is a picture of all the children together. The furry things are baby bunnies.

We own our home, which is in a nice quiet suburb and is fairly central. We have a very nice climate in Cape Town where the bulk of the rain falls in winter. Our early summer is characterised by a lot of South Easterly Wind which is referred to as The Cape Doctor. Although we sometimes get aggravated by the wind, without it we would roast. We are therefor lucky to have our own swimming pool which gets used all summer. Here is a picture of family fun in the pool.

Thomas, the older of my two brothers, lives near us. He is very involved in the scouting movement, a lithographer by trade and became a father on 2nd February,1999. They are now the proud parents of a healthy baby boy. He also runs a disco, so is always up to date with the latest music. They also went to see LOTD in May 98. Ondine and Thomas married in February 1997.

In April 93 my younger brother, Michael, left for Europe. First he toured around but then settled in London. This is also where he met his wife - a South African girl, living and working in London at the time.

Christel and Michael

On 20th March 99 my brother married Plum (her nickname). What a fantastic wedding it was, with friends coming from all parts of the world. Plum is a super person who is very fond of animals as well as children. Whenever Plum and Michael are here, they spend a lot of time with our children and we are all very sad when they go back to England. They have now been accepted for Australia, and will be immigrating to there soon. Now they will be even further away! I dislike goodbye's and airports always make me cry!

Brother Michael and sister Plum

I just love this picture of Plum and Amy, which was taken at the airport in January 1998.

I thought I would show you a few pictures of Cape Town and surroundings, as I am convinced that many of you have never been here. Maybe it will inspire you to come for a visit. Cape Town is a beautiful city. We have the sea and the mountains, endless beaches, lovely walks you can take and drive a bit in the country and a whole different scenery meets you. Wild animals are in game parks – they do not lurk about!
