Steven Culp, "Special Guest Star"
When the episode "Legacy" aired, a couple of
Webbies noticed that there was a change in
the credits. For the first time Steven Culp
was introduced as a "Special Guest Star"
instead of the title used before of
"Also staring".
Webbies got to thinking what this could mean.
Was this good, or bad? As the good "operatives"
they are Webbies investigated. On one of the
mailing lists we asked one of TPTB what the
difference was between the credits. This is
what he said:
"Basically Special Guest Stars are actors such as Montel or Trisha who don't normally
appear in a TV series. Sometimes you will see their 'character name' following this
credit. Also Starring is usually reserved for those actors who recur on the show but
are not in the opening title of the show...Kerri, Randy, etc. Guest stars are those
actors who play one time roles and are never or rarely seen again on the show as that
character. There are exceptions to the above as agents negotiate what they feel is
the best credit for the actor."
After reading this, Webbies panicked a little. So what did this mean in relation
to Steven Culp?
So Webbies had to ask again! "I sure hope this was an "agent negotiation type" thing,
and not one that follows the above description, or Webbies might start worrying now!!!
TPTB who don't want Webbies to have a heart attack just yet, quickly responded:
Stop worrying. It was an agent request.
Webbies let out a sigh or relief! We think this fan said it best on the mailing list:
"I think it's great that SC got the Guest Starring intro... this indicates that
he is starting to be acknowledged by the world as the great actor that he is and that
it's a privilege to have him appear on any show that he does! (I just hope that he
doesn't get too busy doing other things so that he can't be in JAG, like last season!)
Webb Fashion
Even though Webb did not appear in the episode "Florida Straits", the episode gave
Webbies a lot to talk about. The reason? The character of Mic Brumby, who showed up at
Mac's place in a trench coat and dark glass. Webbies agreed that Mic failed BIG time in
his attempt to look cool like Webb.
These are some of the comments Webbies made on the Webb mailing
list.
"All I can say is Webb looks soooo much better in a trench coach
than Mic. I have to say though that scene was very funny."
"What was that "thing" in a trench coat? Mic please stick to your
uniform, leave the trench coat wearing to the cool one: Webb"
"To successfully wear a trenchcoat, particularly a tan one, you
have to be slim, debonair, good looking and have a good contrast
between hair color and complexion. Mic failed miserably on all
counts!"
One of our Webbies got creative enough to write a follow up scene:
"Webb encounters Brumby on the street as Brumby is getting ready to leave for
Mac's. He slowly looks over Brumby in his "spy" getup and then flatly states:
"You know, Brumby, there are those of us who look good in trench coats and then
there are those who should check themselves in a full length mirror before
inflicting themselves on the unsuspecting, fully unprepared, public."
With that, Webb spins around on his heel and saunters off into the night,
leaving Brumby standing on the sidewalk, briefly (oh much too briefly)
thinking that maybe this isn't such a good idea."
Cheryl.
The day after the episode aired, two Webbies were lucky enough to visit the
Paramount studio, where they ran into Mr. Dana Coen, the writer of this
episode. They did not waste the opportunity to tell him what Webbies
were saying about "Mic the Spy". Mr. Coen laughed.
No more trench coats for Mic!
Kathy's Video Corner.
We are always looking for old episodes of shows Steven Culp has been on. When
re runs of a show are no longer playing, we try contacting the fan clubs of
other stars in the show.
This was the
case with Hooperman. Sandy and I were both
contacting other groups. Sandy told me she had found someone
with a copy of Hooperman but they were in England and the
tape format was not compatible. We were disappointed.
I received a response to one of my contacts, which had me
laughing. The person said it was funny this was the second
request for that episode. Another lady named 'Sandy' had asked
about it too.
I explained I knew Sandy and we were working on a fan page
for SC. I described how we do a brief summary of an episode
and have screen captures from the episode.
Well, much to our surprise, Avril volunteered to do the screen captures and write
a brief summary of what Steven's role was.
So when you look at the Hooperman caps think of Avril all the way in England, and
the John Ritter Web Site.
Editor's Notes
Our next regular Journal is scheduled for February. However there will be a special
Journal posted in December to cover the opening of Steven's movie, "13 Days",
and the special Christmas gift Webbies are working on for Steven.
You will notice new changes on the Totally Steven Web site, as we will be making
the script and video items available only to members of the "Steven Culp
Fan Connection". For information on this group of fans, check
out the Steven Culp Fan Connection page.
