The 2001 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival

Through our eyes or, more accurately, through the lens of the digital camera.
I'll figure out how to work this thing yet.

First Weekend, April 27-29

We arrived on Wednesday night, and got caught in some Hurricanes that hit right after our pints at O'Flaherty's.  Serious mistake.  Spent much of the first Friday seeking respite from the pain, but lasted the day and even hit Storyville that night where we saw Beausoleil, Kermit Ruffins, and a little bit of Rosie before fading away.   Wow!

On Saturday, I had forgotten to charge the battery, so the camera wasn't worth much that day.

Sunday was the best day I ever had at any entertainment event.  You know how sometimes you're hot, tired, annoyed at the crowd that won't let you get anywhere near a favorite act, and you say "What am I doing here?", but then you have those moments that are worth the whole trip?  Well, Sunday was an entire day of those moments.  Wonderful perfomers making the magic with their appreciative fans.  Look and share what we had that day.

Second Weekend, May 3-6

This weekend was marked by the dreadful news that Boozoo Chavis passed away.  One of the most influential practitioners after Clifton, the music we know as Zydeco, and the artists who make that music, would not be the same without his example.  Those who continue paid tribute and did what Boozoo would have wanted; they played the music that is their common heritage.

Throughout this weekend, we avoided the Acura crowds and had wonderful times at the Fais Do Do, the Food Heritage Stage, Sprint, Economy Hall, House of Blues, and other venues where we could be close to the artists and live the experience that is so special about this magnificent festival.  We didn't even notice that Saturday drew that record crowd of 160,00, many of whom probably don't really understand what "New Orleans Jazz and Heritage" is about.  We go to New Orleans to see what we can only see in New Orleans, and at Jazz Fest 2001 we lived all of that for seven days.  Can't wait to see you all out there next year!
