African Violet Links

New sites are appearing all the time, and without avidly scouring the Internet for African Violet resources, it is impossible to include all the wonderful links available. Because of this we do not claim that this list is anywhere near complete. If you have found, or have written, a site on African Violets and wish to add it to our list, please email us.

Forums and Email Lists
Sometimes, although reading about how to do something, or what something is can be wonderful, a question will still nag at you. A phrase may not make sense or some small "obvious" aspect may elude you. In these cases I highly recommend talking to other growers. Ideally -- join a local club. Not only is this fun, but also it gives an insight on local, unique growing conditions. Also, local clubs love new blood -- join and share your joy with others! Now, for those of you unable to locate a close enough club, or who want more AV friends -- join an on-line club. You don't have to even speak up -- few lists or forums mind "lurkers", but you'll learn more if you speak up. :-) Email lists are nice because they arrive right in your inbox -- beware though -- AV growers can be a talkative bunch (thank goodness!).
Before (or right after) you join an e-mail list, it is a very good idea to learn -- or even refresh -- on some of theNetiquette. For example, remembering not to write in all capital letters, learn to quote only parts of the message you're responding to, remember to use smiley faces because tone of voice and facial expression are not availble in emails, etc. One thing not listed on this site, which is important in these days, is to list in your signature where you are from. This is just being polite. I end all my emails with my first name, city, state, country, my personal website and the Fantasy Violeteers AVC website links. I actually specify Northern California, but that's a California thing (grin). I even do this on the Forums I read. The reason this is done is because, remember, you are not corresponding with people who are all in the USA. They are all over the world. Literally. Keep that in mind.
- Violet Reflections An email list. This is a great place to begin learning. People are always kind, no question is stupid or dumb, and questions are answered. If you ask something and you don't see an answer, ask again, as often people will think someone else with more experience will take the question. Be sure to check out their Files. They also have a Share the Joy program and Bingo, which are wonderful --I won't ruin the surprise--, go check them out!
- AVconnectionn This is another email list.
- AVInternational Yet another email list. This is another group of experienced growers, but with a higher volume of mail. Again, questions are welcomed.
- NetViolets Yet another email list.
- African Violets Yet another email list.
- African Violets Forum An online Forum "for the discussion of African Violets (Saintpaulia) and related Gesneriad species" as the owner explains. O/T or Off Topic threads are a bit more welcome here, and it has more of an atmosphere of a club (to me, anyway). Be sure to read the Rules and Information! Few questions go unanswered here!
- African Violet Lovers Forum Another online Forum. This link takes you to the opening page of the Forum. Click on the link to get into the actual African Violet Lovers Forum. O/Ts are common here as the owner and moderators encourage a feeling of friendship. Few questions go unanswered here as well. This is a high volume place though -- we're a talkative bunch!! Be sure to click on the African Violet Lovers Banner to get to the Trade Pages.
- GESNERIPHILES E-MAIL GROUP According to the list owner, Gesneriphiles e-mail list is "A forum for gesneriad and African violet growers to discuss horticulture issues and experiences."
Informational / Reference Sites
- AVSA The African Violet Society of America is the international organization for African Violets. I highly recommend joining the AVSA as you get the African Violet Magazine, and discounts on the products sold in their store (such as the program First Class that lists descriptions of the registered cultivars of African Violets -- a definite requirement for me!)
- The Gesneriad Reference Web The Gesneriad Reference Web is full of good information and links about Gesneriads -- which is the family of many interesting plants, including the African Violet. The site recommends using the Search page if you are looking for information about a specific plant or topic.
- American Gloxinia & Gesneriad Society AGGS is also full of good information. Why not check out some relatives of the African Violet (Saintpaulia)?
- African Violets African Violet Trading Etiquette A personal website page with a whole lot of very important information. If you trade African violets, want to trade or ever plan to trade, this page is a must read
- Online ConversionThis website is specifically for cooking conversions, but many of these can be useful to the African Violet Grower as not all of us use the same measuring systems. If a friend in New Zealand gives you a recipe, you may need to convert it into US measurements, etc. I use this resource for making correct conversions for our newsletter.
- ISO Latin 1 Character Entities and HTML Escape Sequence Table How do you add a ¢ symbol? How do you add those marks over letters for different languages, like voilá Go here and learn! Note -- include the ; after the symbols for browers to read the symbols correctly. Don't worry -- a little HTML won't hurt.
Gardening Sites
- GreenfireThis is a an "Organic and Hydroponic Gardeners Emporium" with "Outdoor, indoor and greenhouse gardening supplies for both commercial growers & Hobbyists". It is where I buy my coconut coir for my African violet soilless mix.
- Cascade Carnivorous PlantsA natural alternative to pesticides for some pests. Also -- simply cool plants. This site also includes pictures and information on care.
Personal Sites
- Rachel's Reflections Here is one wonderful site. Rachel has gone to great lengths to include pictures and clear explanations. She is one very kind, thoughtful lady!
- Isabell's African Violets Isabell has pages on her African Violets, other gesneriads and a links section.
Vendors
By listing vendors here, we do not in any way endorse them or say that they are better than other, non-listed vendors. Actually, those listed just happen to be ones with websites that we (ok, me, the one who writes these pages) have run across, and remembered to put here. Go and drool, or go and learn. (I try and do both, but my keyboard gets soggy.)
- African Violets by Florals of FredericksThis is a pretty complete catalog online as well, with pictures, and a place with information. It seems like you print out an order form. However there is a toll free number available and numerous payment methods and information on shipping costs.
- Cape Cod VioletryThis mostly lists what sell and how to contact them.
- Chestnut Country VioletsThis site features an online catalog and pictures. You can pay via Paypal, for us internet types.
- Country Livin' CreationsA website for Double Potted Self-Watering Planters. "Quality and Unique Ceramics African Violet Pots/Self Watering Planters". There is also an email, walita@dm-tech.netA very nice website -- and very nice people!
- Rob’s Mini-o-letsOk, this is full of goodies (and lots of pictures!). It also has an online ordering form (secure), for us internet types.
- Travis' Violets The last I visited, this site had a place to order a catalog, and a few lovely pictures and descriptions of some of Travis' African Violets. It has contact information, as well.
Clubs
There are not a lot of African Violet Clubs out there with websites. Some consist of a single page listing their meeting location. Others, however, go far and beyond the call of duty and are wonderful sites. Here, over time, we hope to list most, if not all, of the AV Club websites.
- Lake Area Violets Growers of MinnesotaThis club meets in Twin Cities Area, MN. The club has got to be wonderful -- the site sure is! It has a listing of events, great FAQ (frequently Asked Questions), information about chimeras and terrariums, and a good Links section. Go and enjoy!
- Toronto African Violet Society This club meets in Toronto, Ontario Canada. The website includes great helpful hints, meeting information , and pictures of AVs.
