Farmingbury Woman's Club donates Mimosa tree to town of Wolcott.

Farmingbury Mimosa Tree is alive and well in Peterson Park. It is now growing in young children's playground near small gazebo in Peterson Park. The story behind this tree is a story of club cooperation. This tree was given to Farmingbury Woman's Club of Wolcott about 1996 by Connecticut General Federation of Women's Club's conservation chairman at Connecticut state convention. Each of the 60 Connecticut General Federated Women's clubs was given a tiny tree. It was in a styrofoam coffee cup and the tree was about 3 inches tall. Margaret Winters, being known for her talent in gardening was given the tree to care for. When the tree was about 2-3 feet tall she brought the tree to Farmingbury Woman's Club President Rosemary West. The thought was that the tree was large enough to be planted outside and near the gazebo on the green , of course our first choice. Farmingbury Woman's Club donated the gazebo to town green in 1998. The Wolcott town crew did not think the tree would survive because of its size. Two more years went by with the tree housed at the West home. Sylvia Russell, Farmingbury Woman's Club Conservation Chairman, went to Wolcott Park Dept and asked to have Mimosa tree planted on green near gazebo. The Park Dept said it could be planted at Peterson Park. This spring Sylvia Russell, Fran Thornberg and Rosemary West went to Peterson park and picked a few spots that Mimosa tree would flourish. The tree was planted June 2001 by Wolcott Park Dept. Mimosa tree is about 4 feet tall. When you are enjoying an outing at Peterson park please notice "our" tree. Enjoy
