Lieutenant Talyn Rac Part Ten: The Long Road
by Sorlk Lewis
John fell through the ventilation shaft right into Scorpiuses chambers. He landed with a hard thud on top of the Scaren, knocking the wind out of himself. Aeryn slid back and dropped the twelve feet to the ground. John rolled over and grasped for breath while Aeryn pinned Scorpius and held a pulse pistol to his head. “Don’t move.”, she hissed in his ear. She made sure that they were a good distance from the hidden alarm trigger. “You are either very brave or very foolish Officer Sun.” She ignored him and turned her attention to John who was still gasping for air, “John, are you all right?” He tried to grin and barely said, “Just peachy Sundance.” “Crichton, I will retrieve the rest of your wormhole technology.”, said Scorpius. John staggered up and held onto the side of the desk, “It’s not my technology Scorpy. The Ancients gave it to me without my knowledge or did you forget my first time in the chair?” The half-breed just scowled as Aeryn shoved the weapon deeper into his neck. “What should we do with him Crichton?” John had an evil look cross his face, “I’ve got an idea or two.”
Talyn was becoming anxious, another new emotion to him. He heard the sound of a scanner pass below him and then some murmurs. He knew what was coming next; a stasis blast shot through the nearest vent. It whizzed by his head by a mere inch or two. Talyn started back peddling from the grate as a commando started to climb into the shaft. He grabbed the pulse rifle that Aeryn had left him and took a few shots at the commando. The other Peace Keeper ducked out before the blasts’ hit the wall behind him. Talyn jumped up in a lager area and started running. After a few microns of this, he could feel his back becoming soaked. His wound burned as blood and sweat mingled and ran down his back. Talyn started to become light headed as he came to a narrow junction. He bent down to squirm threw, but the sudden movement caused him to pass out in the hot access shaft.
“How ya like my idea Scorpy?” “This will not affect me Crichton.” “Oh yeah, sure Scorpy. I think that half Sebacean part of you will be at the very least uncomfortable. Aeryn, you almost finished?” She was standing at the control console, programming the chair. John suddenly realized something, “Deja’vu.” Aeryn finally responded, “Almost. I just have to redirect the power source to concentrate on extraction.” She then registered the second thing he had said, “What did you say?” “Deja’vu, I’ll explain later.” “You’ll explain a lot more later than just Deja’vu.” John was stunned; he had no clue what she was talking about. “Finished Crichton. All we have to do is push this.”, she said as she referred to a black knob. “Hope you enjoy the ‘this is your life pain cycle’ Scorpy. I know I did.” John checked the bindings on the Aurora Chair once more and then gave Aeryn the thumbs up. She pushed and twisted the black knob as John climbed into the access shaft. As they closed the grate behind them, they could start to hear Scorpius make a low-pitched sound. “Must be a Scarens’ equivalent to a scream.”, stated John dryly. He didn’t want to admit it, but he actually enjoyed sticking Scorpius in the chair. “We need to go get Talyn.” “Yeah, let’s go get your little brother.”
The three commandos made their way to Talyn in the repair tunnel. They found him flat on his face with his back soaked in blood. The temperature had been raised to dangerous levels for Sebaceans in hope that they could flush out Talyn, Aeryn, and maybe even Crichton. “Look at what we have here.”, stated the Lt. of the group as the second commando kicked Talyn in the side. He groaned and coughed. “Get up your Hynerian highness.”, commented the third. All three commandos laughed at that. “We should get out of here. The techs must still be trying to get the other two out of these tunnels.” “Yes sir.”, said the two officers as they picked up Talyns arms and began to drag him to an exit.
Aeryn and John counted together in their heads. One… two… three! They both swung down and hit the two officers squarely in the face with the heels of their boots. Aeryn dropped down and trained her pulse pistol on the Lieutenant who did the same. John was the deciding factor; he dropped down and spoke to the Lt. in his Peace Keeper accent, “Stand down Lieutenant.” “Who are you to order me *human*? I already know of your previous deceptions, this one will also fail.” John grinned, “Yeah, ya caught me. Would you like to take the three hundred dollars or curtain number three?” He caught the Lieutenant off guard enough with his question for Aeryn to disarm him. John slammed him against the wall and kicked his legs out from under him. Aeryn knew more about wounds, well at least battle wounds, than John did so she went over to help Talyn. “Hey scumbag, what do you know about me?”, asked John in an insane manner. The Lt. didn’t respond so John slammed him into the floor, which gave way under the force. The Lieutenant went crashing to the floor unconscious. “Oh shit, we will have company soon.”, he muttered. Aeryn was now stitching up the hole in Talyns back again. “Crichton, get over here. I’m not a med tech.” That shook John from his daze, “We’d better get going. I’ll get the marauder or Prowler or whatever to get us out, OK?” “Yeah, you just need to do it fast. Talyn has lost a lot of blood.” “On it. Be careful while I’m gone Aeryn.” She didn’t even bother with a retort. John jumped down through the hole and took of running towards the hanger.
Scorpius growled in pain as his assistant replaced his coolant core. His little stint in the chair had almost overheated his brain; Crichton would most certainly pay for this. Scorpius decided that instead of showing him mercy once all necessary information was obtained, he would keep Crichton alive and subject him to the chair every few arns. Yes, that will be a most sweet revenge. Thought the Scaren half-breed.
John raced down the halls as fast as he dare. He did not need to slam headlong into a group of commandos at this moment, or ever for that matter. He ran into the full hanger and gawked at the quantity of ships for a moment. He spotted a newly restocked marauder in the corner of the room. Perfect! John thought to himself.
“Aeryn, Aeryn are you still there?”, whispered John. “What do you think?”, she replied in an annoyed tone. John hopped back up into the shaft. Talyn was half way conscious. “At least he isn’t dead. You’ve learned a lot Aeryn.” “Help me get him out of here now.” “Sure Aeryn.” They both picked him up, John lifting his left side and Aeryn lifting his right. “I can walk you know.”, complained Talyn. “Be quiet. This is going to be hard enough with out you squawking.”, snapped Aeryn. They lowered him to the floor below the access panel. “I found a safe way. Follow me.” They picked up Talyn and started running down the hall.
“Stop.”, the officer ordered her men. She heard the soft padding of boots coming towards them. No one else is supposed to be in this sector. She thought. Just then, Aeryn, John, and Talyn plowed into the four commandos knocking them all over. The whole group was a tangle of limbs and weapons. Aeryn had grabbed one of the commandos side arms and now had it shoved against his temple. John had whipped out both of his weapons and had them trained on two of the other Peace Keepers. The fourth had her pulse pistol shoved in John’s face while the others covered Talyn and Aeryn. “Looky here, we got our own little standoff. Who wants to go first?”, asked John in a crazy way. Aeryn had a deep feeling in her gut that they wouldn’t get out of this one. No one expected what Talyn would do though. He shoved John towards the female Peace Keeper and gave a swift Pantak Jab to the nearest commando. Aeryn followed suit; she kicked the furthest away officer and broke the nearest nose with a jab. The female Peace Keeper jumped up and grabbed John. She shoved the weapon of hers deep into his neck. “Don’t move or I will kill him.” Aeryn knew it was a bluff; she dove for the officers boots and knocked her feet out from under her. John went down on top of the whole mess with a thud. When the officer went down there was a sickening crack against the cement floor. “God, are you OK Aeryn?”, John asked after a moment. He and Aeryn struggled up. “Yes, I am fine.” While Aeryn and John were preoccupied with the female Peace Keeper, Talyn successfully knocked out the other two and made sure the third commando was out cold. “She’s still alive, right?”, said John as a sinking feeling took him over inside. Aeryn bent down, “No, she’s not.” Aeryn could see the pain on John’s face from another death that he was involved in. “We need to keep moving.”, said Aeryn as she went over to Talyn. “Yeah.”
“Sir, the three commandos have been found. They are not dead, just unconscious.”, stated the Lieutenant while giving his report. “Any signs of Crichton or the traitors?” “No Scorpius. We did not receive a report from sector twelve though. I have already sent a team to see what is keeping them.” “Crichton.” “Excuse me sir?”
“Your limo awaits Miss Sun.”, commented John as he pointed to the marauder in the corner. The trio made their way to the ship. A bright blue light started flashing and an unbearable siren started up. Aeryn yelled over the sound, “Base wide evacuation alarm!” John knew the reason; it was the natives. They finally made it to the marauder as the hanger filled with evacuating Peace Keepers. John secured an unconscious Talyn into a seat while Aeryn started up the ship. They blended in with all of the evacuating ships while they made their escape. “Just like Star Wars.”, grinned John.

“We are receiving a distress buoy set on Moya’s frequency.”, stated Pilot. Zhaan looked at D’argo and Chiana, “You don’t think…” “It could be a trap.”, said D’argo matter of factly. “What if it is them? Are we just going to leave them out there?”, squeaked Chiana. Rygel was nowhere to be found, probably taking stock of John and Aeryn’s possessions already. Pilot looked shocked at what he said next, “We are receiving a communication. Patching them through right now.” John’s dirty mug popped up on the view screen, “Hi ya guys! Did you miss us?” He grinned as he spoke. Zhaan and D’argo were speechless. Chiana started yelling and jumping up and down, “You’re alive! You’re not dead!” Finally, D’argos vocal cords worked again, “Bring them aboard Pilot.” “I am already working on it.” As Moya caught the ship with her docking web, Aeryn’s face came onto the view screen also, “Zhaan, Talyn is severely wounded.” “We will meet you in the docking bay with a med kit Aeryn. It is good to see you both.” John grinned and the transmission was cut.
Several arns later Aeryn and John were sitting on the terrace resting. “I told Talyn what you told me.” John turned and looked at Aeryn curiously, “And that would be?” She looked at the floor, “That I… we would give him another chance. A chance to be more than a Peace Keeper.” John smiled softly. After a moment of silence Aeryn spoke, “We need to talk John.”
