Chance Encounters
(Part four)
The cramped marauder and the strict rationing were getting on John’s nerves.
Aeryn ruled with an iron hand distributing the meager rations ‘fairly’ to everyone.
John moved up and took his shift watching the scanners come on to find Moya. It had only been three days, but it felt like a year.
As John took over for tek Lans he resisted the urge to turn the scanner on manually.
The forty-mircrot interval was mind numbingly boring.
Finally the screen flashed on.
For an instant John could see the edge of the scan horizon. The Peacekeeper station was several aurns away. Ships that were there yesterday had left.
John let his eyes absorb the image for within a micron
the screen was blank again.
John let the image expose itself to his mind’s eye. He could see that some of the Peacekeeper vessels had left
the station, but none in their direction.
John let out a sigh of relief.
‘ How many days are we going to sit here? Moya could be lost somewhere out there. The thing to do is...’ John stopped in mid-thought when an energy reading appeared.
At first it looked like an explosion pushing space dust and
debris away from an expanding center.
John over rode the auto scan device so he continued to view what was happening.
The expansion became a circle of energy that soon allowed a Leviathan to pass through it.
“ Moya do you read?” John said into his the Com.
“ Crichton!” Pilot said.
“ Stay where you are we will come to you,” John said.
Aeryn was by his side in an instant.
“ Lets get the Hezmana out of here,” Aeryn said.
The marauder bolted from its hiding place and sped toward the Leviathan.
“ We are ready for you to board Officer Sun,” Pilot said
as he opened the docking bay doors to space.
As the marauder entered Moya, the Leviathan turned and started away from the Peacekeeper station.
“ Wait a squad of Prowlers is closing in on our position,” Pilot said.
“ Prowlers! The station must have been tracking us.” John said.
“ Probably waiting to see what we were waiting for.” Plu said from behind the control station.
Aeryn brought the marauder down within the hanger deck.
Even from within the marauder John could sense Moya going into starburst.
John got up and opened the hatch, which set down its own ramp. Aeryn stepped in front of John and led the group to
Moya’s deck. Zhaan and Chiana stood with a male Nabari named Renni.
Zhaan could hardly wait to welcome John but her face held a look of concern.
After hugs John looked into the blue eyes on the blue woman.
“ What’s wrong Zhaan?” John said.
“ We received a message...” Zhaan began.
“ It’s from D’Argo... he’s in trouble,” Chiana blurted out.
Zhaan looked at Chiana with a tired look on her face and then knitted her brows as she continued.
“ ... Yes D’Argo and several of his soldiers went back to help his people in this horrible war. Apparently they were told D’Argo’s true Identity or perhaps he told them.
He has since been arrested by his own people and was able to send this message just as Moya was leaving Luxan
controlled space.” Zhaan said and then she put a small triangular disk into John’s hand.
“ John if there is any way we can help I know you can do it.” Zhaan said tilting her head just so.
John looked at Aeryn who was between shocked and dismayed.
“ John we can’t let him be killed!” Chiana said clearly upset.
The Nabari male merely nodded.
“ I have heard much about you John Crichton,” Renni said as he stepped up to confront John.
“ I am Renni of the Nabari. I will assist in anyway you wish.” The young man said.
John looked him over. Renni wasn’t as full grown as the
only other two male Nabari John had met.
He was about Chiana’s size.
John turned to Aeryn with a tired, but determined look.
“ Well you up for another rescue mission?” John said.
Plu and Lans looked at each other.
“ Excuse us. We agreed to risk our lives for freedom. You
promised us that we would be dropped off at a Sabacean
Colonies... remember?” Plus said.
“We aren’t responsible for the decision the Luxan made.
He went back to his own people himself. They are at war
with Peacekeepers... we can’t just walk in there in without being identified and killed on sight.” Lans said.
Aeryn looked at the two of them.
She knew they were right. It was none of their affair.
John looked at Zhaan.
“I have an Idea.” John said.
“We will take these two to the Colony. If I can I might have a little success with my ex-mother-in-law, with Rigel’s help,” John said.
Aeryn’s eyebrow lifted.
“ We can deliver on our promise to these two brave boys and perhaps get clothes, cargo, and passes to Luxan space via as a Sabacean transport.” John said.
Rigel stopped his throne-sled.
“ That will take a bit of diplomacy John...” Rigel said.
“ You -are- the negotiator,” John said.
“ Wait... we would have to back track through the territories. The risk for that Luxan is far too great.
Besides his own People may have killed him already.” Rigel said.
“ Let me see the message... I want to know what is going on first hand.” John said.
Aeryn nodded in agreement.
The message began to play in the recorder device.
The image of Quiyt’Ie appeared on the screen.
“ Who’s that?” John asked.
“ That is one of the poor Luxan prisoners we rescued from the Legionaries that led us to you John.” Zhaan said.
John put the tape on hold.
“ When this is all over we will sit down and have a long talk about that. All I need to know is can we trust this person?” John said.
Zhaan nodded that she did.
Aeryn looked at John and shrugged.
Rigel rolled his eyes.
The two Peacekeeper teks shook their heads.
“ You two don’t matter; we are dropping you off.” John said to the two teks.
John hit the play button.
“ Friends of Ka D’Argo. Our General and your friend has been falsely accused of treachery. He has been arrested and will be taken to Terre’ Saret for trial. Please come to assist. I will delay all I can, but if this message is not heard. We will be on Terre’ Saret. A trial will be held in less than six weekens from now. If guilty he will be executed. Please help. I am Quiyt’ Ie.” The Luxan female
bowed low.
“ You see, -he- isn’t asking for our help,” Rigel began.
“ What is she to D’Argo?” John asked.
“ She is a common Luxan peasant woman. She was a grower of food for the soldiers that were captured by the Peacekeepers.” Renni said, “She is of the lower class of people in Luxan society.
“ Then why is she sticking her neck out for D’Argo?” John asked turning toward the others.
“ I’m not sure John, but I believe she has fallen in love with D’Argo and is desperately trying to save him,” Zhaan said without revealing her own feelings.
“ Pilot do you have any way to find this Terre’ Saret?” Aeryn said turning toward the clamshell.
“ The maps we received from the Peacekeepers and the Lothorian are not extensive enough. There are over seven hundred known life sustaining planets that are
within a four weeken distance of the border asteroid
we dropped D’Argo and the Luxans off at.” Pilot said.
“ Lets go see the empress. She might be able to help
us.” John said.
