Her head throbbed and there was a pain in her side she groaned as she tried
to force herself into a sitting position. It didn’t work. She heard footsteps
coming down the corridor, it felt like someone was hitting her head
repeatedly with an anvil.
“Shut. . .up.” she struggled. A voice came over Crichton’s communicator.
“John? DK had a thought, is Vicky her real name?” Zhaan questioned.
“Nice one DK, I’ll ask.” He strolled in to see her lying on the floor, he
took not much notice. “So, it is ‘Vicky’ or is there anything else?”
“Kaa, Kaa Renn.” she answered, her head was throbbing, but she tried not to
let it show.
“Well, Kaa, how did you end up down here?”
“P&Q. What the frell happened? Did they attack us?”
“Yes, we’re orbiting Mars right now.” she looked down at her side where the
majority of the pain was. Pulse gun.
“Crichton, my gun, it’s. . . I shot . .?!”
“Oh crap.”
“OK, I’ll be fine, it was on the lowest setting. Just. . Just help me get
up.” she held out her hand and he hauled her up.“Why did you lie to us all that time?”
“I don’t know, it seemed easier, just to let you think things were as they
seemed.” she shrugged “Don’t tell Aeryn my name.”
“Huh?” he replied, taken by surprise with this unrelated comment.
“Her mother’s surname is Renn too. Only she doesn’t know that, at least I
hope she doesn’t.”
“So, you’re related?”
“Yes, half sisters.”
“But shouldn’t you. . .” she cut him off abruptly.
“Yes, but if they parents request it, the child can take the mother’s name.”
“Why not tell her if she doesn’t know?”
“I’m afraid that she will know.”
“And.”
“Well, you know peacekeepers... I know peacekeepers, she’ll be interrogating
me faster than you can say ‘Marion Jones’. She’ll want to know why I didn’t
tell her.”
“And you didn’t because. . .”
“We’re going in circles here. Be thankful for what I do give you.” she
stumbled and almost toppled to the ground.
“Whoa, not too fast, you haven’t seen Zhaan yet.”
“Are ya sure she’ll treat me? I’m mean, I lied to you. . . big time.” she
used one of the human expressions that had crawled and wriggled their way
into her vocabulary.
“I’m sure she will V. . . Kaa.” he reassured her.“Back again?” he questioned happily, in some ways he was their best friend
here, a smiling, welcome face anytime.
“Yes, for a chat. . . and some aspirin.” he strolled along the isle while
Aeryn briskly walked up to the counter and leaned over.
“(I think I’m pregnant).” she whispered happily. He was tempted to say
‘again’, but thought, not today.
“(Want a test?)” he whispered back. She nodded in response and he disappeared
into the storeroom. He came back with a small bag and handed it to Aeryn, who
promptly packed it into her shoulder bag while mouthing ‘Thank you’.
“Got it.” he bounced up to the counter, he had no idea why Chris was beaming
behind the counter, but he was too tired to ask questions.
“I doubt that will have much effect.” Aeryn pointed at the small pack of
tablets.
“You want something stronger? Take a 2 month ride to Zhaan.” he suggested, a
hint of sarcasm entering his voice, but not a nasty type.
“What?! And be shot down as soon as I enter the...” realising the company she
was in, she replaced the word ‘atmosphere’ with something more suitable, “the
city.” John picked her up and spun her round.
“Well then, we are to put up with this then.” she rolled her eyes, and shook
her head towards Chris.
He wished he could be like them, he loved his wife all right, but they could
never express it so openly. He got the feeling that they were making the most
of the time they have left. You know, like they could die tomorrow and they
wanted the other to know how much they cared. Silly though, why would they
need to? They were just very, very in love.
“So, you going to pay for that?” he said smiling.
“Yeah.” Aeryn pulled a 10 dollar bill from her pocket and handed it over the
counter. Once they had the change, they turned to leave, but then Crichton
remembered something.
“Oh, look, Chris you asked for this.” he handed Chris a picture of Kristin.
“Thanks, next time I’ll get you one of Nell.” Kristin and Nell would have
been best friends, or worst enemies if they had met. They balanced each other
perfectly, but one wrong phrase from either one and they’d look at the
other’s strength, and covet it. Oh, well, life’s hard.
“See you.” Little did any of them know that they’d never get the picture.“Come on, here we are.”
“Thanks. Ow!” Kaa emphasised as Zhaan treated the wound.
“Sorry.” Kaa could not hear what she had expected from Zhaan, anger or rage,
none. Just the face of a Delvian.
“Better. I’m getting up now.” she stated. No one stopped her. “I think that
we should leave. There is nothing for us here, we will be attacked until we
are brought down.” she spoke her mind.
“I do not like to say this but I agree.” Zhaan said from behind.
“Well, let’s talk to everyone else. Then decide.”“Right, we are here to decide.”
“Decide what?” Rygel asked indignantly.
“Whether to leave now or not.” Crichton took a deep breath. “All those in
favour of leaving now, raise your hand.” Everyone’s hand went up, including
Pilot’s, he let out the breath he had been holding. They weren’t going to
have an argument about it.
“OK Pilot, Starburst. (We’re leaving it all behind)” he whispered finally. He
swallowed and took one last look at his home, it was gone, forever.* * * *
* *8 CYCLES LATER
“Now Dad?” Kristin asked tentatively, she remembered the place vaguely. But
she was still scared. “What if he’s not there?”
“Just go.” he pushed her round the corner and she stood upright and defiant,
she scanned the area first, only a few people, no threat. She realised that
she had started to shake, she took a deep breath and regained control. She
had rattlers, now she knew how her father used to feel half the time. She
pushed open the door and entered, no other people, apart from a man behind
the counter who seemed oddly familiar.
“Hello.” he smiled.
“Hello. Are you Chris Woodridge?” she asked.
“Yes.” she swallowed and held out her hand as her father had taught her.
“Kristin, Kristin Crichton.” she introduced herself. He stood there, mouth
open. He only knew one Kristin.
“Crichton? That means your father really was...”
“Yes, my father is actually John Crichton. Please, please don’t phone the
authorities.”
“No, I won’t. 7 years, I haven’t seen you.” he changed the subject.
“I know. We’re sorry. Can my parents come in?” she questioned.
“Yes, why of course, I’d love to see them again.” Kristin indicated outside.
“I’ll just go get them.”“Hello John, Aeryn.” he nodded at them. “Whose this?”
“This is Jack.” John introduced his son formally.
“Hey.” the boy replied.
“Great to meet you.” he looked up at Aeryn and John, he had a feeling that
this was bad news, or news that he wouldn’t like. He could tell they were
scared, oh so scared.
“Er, Chris. There really only was one reason we came back here, we, um, felt
we owed you an explanation. We felt that you should know who we really were.”
“I guessed that John. Your John Crichton, the real astronaut.”
“Yes, he is. But I am more.” Aeryn felt she should be the one to say, this
was her secret from him and it should be hers to tell. “I am Aeryn Sun. I am
an ex-peacekeeper soldier. I met Crichton when he first came through a
wormhole. I am Sebacean. I’m, er, not human.” she added in case he didn’t
understand.
“Hm. Well, er, I’m glad to have made first contact.” he smiled, this was big,
the thought crossed his mind to go to the press. He banished it, no matter
who they were, they were his friends and he could never betray them. “It’s
nice to know Sebaceans made there way here without peacekeeper help.” his
smile grew wider, their brows creased.
“Just how many Sebaceans are there here?!”
“About a thousand.” he informed them.
“Oh dear god!” he almost fell over.
“It’ one of the reasons you were taken in to custody. They thought Aeryn was
working for the peacekeepers. This was supposed to be a safe haven for us.”
“Oh. Well, I’m not.... What about Kaa? She was a peacekeeper.”
“Oh her, she was considered neutral after we discovered her. She was in the
database, we haven’t been able to track her for the last...” he trailed off.
“She’s with you isn’t she?”
“Yes. She is. She’s fine.”
“Well then, are you staying?” he asked.
“No. I am assuming humans are still in he major powers so, we can’t.” Aeryn
replied.
“Yes, we keep as lower profile as possible. But some of the younger ones do
not listen.”
“Well, er, we have to go. All we really came back here to do was tell you who
we were.”
“Wait, I need some details for the records and I have something for you.” he
took out a notebook and pen. “Ship?”
“Leviathan and peacekeeper leviathan hybrid.” Chris raised his eyebrow. “Long
story, do not ask. Not loyal to the peacekeepers though.”
“Crew?”
“2 human, 2 Sebacean, 2 Sebacean- humans, 1 Luxan, 1 Nebari, 1 Nebari- Luxan,
1 Hynerian, 1 Delvian, and several hundred DRD’s.”
“Quite a mix you have there.”
“Tell me about it. Sheesh. Well, goodbye.” They turned to leave.
“Wait.” he produced a photograph. “I said I would give you a picture of Nell
and I am. Let me take one of all of you... for the record.” Aeryn took the
picture and then gathered her family together. It was over, they were home. Moya and Talyn. They never knew how a short trip
to Earth could affect them so much. Sebaceans on Earth?
This time, they left a beacon. The satellites should pick it up 12 arns after
they had starburst. All hezmana broke loose on Moya as they returned. Neri
wanted to know all about what had happened on Earth, strange things happen,
like Chiana getting pregnant 1 cycle after they had left Earth. That had been
the biggest shock for them all. A nice one though.
They had had no trouble with the peacekeepers but other people still
sometimes troubled them, or helped them. The Ancients had come back to John
and given them a wormhole back to Earth, the real one.
Oh, they had truly had a wild time, but now it was dark and quiet and un
interupted sleep, filled the crew.Fini
