John sat next to Aeryn’s bio-bed.  She was unconscious and sleeping off her night.

“What the frell made you do what you did last night, Aeryn?” he asked out loud, even though he knew she couldn’t hear him.  “That was so not you!”  He sat there, unable to answer his own questions.  He looked at Aeryn, so innocent lying there on the bed, her hair cascading freely over her shoulders and her mouth parted ever so slightly.  He got up and washed his hands, running his wet hands through his tousled hair.  He looked at her from the sink and stood there, leaning against it.

“What were you thinking?  Were you trying to make me jealous?”  He walked back over and sat down again, resting his elbows on his knees and leaning into them.  He looked at the floor, but jerked his head up when he thought he heard a groan.

“Where am I?” Aeryn asked groggily.  She tried to sit up, but John gently pushed her back down.

“You are on Moya in the Apothecary.  You had quite a night.  Do you remember anything?” he asked her.  ‘Like, why you bar danced?’ he thought to himself.  He scooted closer to her, and she took a deep breath.

“I did something very foolish, didn’t I?” she said.  He could tell she remembered and she simply didn’t want to say what she did.  He nodded and a slight smile crept onto his face.

“Why did you dance, Aeryn?  And on the bar of a dingy place like that, no less,” John said.  He looked away to hide her embarrassment, but he could see it in her eyes before she moved away.  She sat up despite John’s attempts to get her to lie down.  After she had situated herself, she answered.

“I saw how you were…”  She stopped.  She knew her answer would sound stupid and childish.  But, she continued anyway.  “I saw how much you like the girls who were dancing, so I thought I would dance, and then you would see that I am just as good as them,” she blurted out.  As soon as she said it, her eyes widened and she tried to get down.  John had a rather surprised look on his face.  She hopped down and started quickly for the door, but John’s arm on hers made her stop.  She froze, and all she saw was his arm.  The only thing that mattered, that existed, was his touch on her.  She slowly turned around, and John pulled her close to him.

He lowered his mouth to her ear, just as he had the day before, and said, “I look at them, Aeryn, but I love you.  I was just doing what guys do.  I could never go for that type, because the exploit their bodies.  They think that they have nothing decent about them except their looks.  I want a girl who is strong, intelligent, beautiful and special.  I want you, Aeryn.  You don’t have to prove anything to me.  You just have to be you.  The only person you need to be is you.”  She looked at the floor to conceal her tears, but one flowed down her cheek and landed on his arm.  He looked down at it and lifted her chin up.  Her tear-stained eyes looked back at him, but they did not have the usual sparkle.  There was something missing, and John couldn’t bear to see her hurting.  “What’s wrong, baby?” he asked.  She sniffled and smiled.

“I’m trying to figure out what I did to deserve a guy like you,” she said, putting her arms around him and hugging him as tight as she could.  He caressed her hair and kissed the top of her head.

“What did you do?  Well Aeryn, you saved the last dance.  For me.  Forever.”
