dark Scandinavians, continued
In 1864 a Scandinavian named J. F. Carlsen volunteered for a suicide mission. One writer called it the world's first 'Mission Impossible'. But the mission was a success, and Carlsen's ship the Confederate H. L. Hunley was the first submarine in history to sink an enemy warship. Working with 136-year old remains, forensic sculptor Sharon Long used bits of skin, hair, and calcified cartilage to reconstruct Carlsen's face. To help her get the skin tones just right, she spent time "studying Scandinavians". |
