The Secondary winding was made using 150mm PVC pipe. Both ends have screw fittings on them. The Base of the primary assembly has an end-cap bolted to it so that the secondary can be screwed in place. The toroid is fitted in the same way. I will be making up discs of HDPE to seal the inside preventing any internal arcing off the sockets where the toroid and earth connect to it. The coil was hand wound using 0.63mm winding wire and the length of the coil is 98cm, I think that equates to roughly 1500 turns (I hope so or my calculations will be wrong). I am not sure if the winding is quite up to scratch but I think it will be OK once coated with several layers of Polyurethane. It is not a very good picture and every little gap between turns stands out. Next time, I won't stand so close and I think (as you can see from the shadow) the sun was just to the right of me and the glare off the white PVC was too intense. The connection to the toroid and ground connections is made by using banana plugs. 18/3/2001: Coated winding with first 2 layers of polyurethane varnish. Messy shit to work with. 19/3/2001: Made first HDPE disc to be sealed into the top section of the secondary to help prevent internal arc's from breaking out. 25/3/2001: Coated winding with another 2 layers of polyurethane and sealed HDPE disc into top. Didn't have time to start on second disc 27/3/2001: Made second HDPE disc and sealed it into bottom of secondary. |
