OK so you've seen the reviews saying that this movie sucks? Well I have two confessions to make before I begin reviewing this (i) it isn't exactly a classic movie and (ii) I hated "Spider Man"! Spider Man's big appealing point was the way he would take the mick out of his enemies, something he never does in the crummy movie. Daredevil on the other hand is a much darker character suffering from many problems of conscience. Batman's character was based upon the Daredevil comics and it is not hard to see the resemblance. One of the best things about this movie is that it finally brings back the dark aspects everyone loved about the movie "Batman" while incorporating the acrobatics over New York that helped make up for the mushy parts of the "Spider Man" movie. As per usual with a superhero movie, however, there is little realism or depth to this movie. It is difficult for a movie to capture the beauty and emotion that the comics attempt to convey. Movies are a very different medium and tend to undermine these features. Thus the costume looks tacky, the lines become hollow and the storyline becomes simplistic and threatens to bore the audience. Considering these problems Daredevil does very well. The powers of the daredevil are shown well and the emotions between Ben Affleck and Electra don't feel superficial. The bad guys also manage to convey the good mixture of humour and menace which is necessary for a comic book baddie. Believe it or not (cause I'm surprised myself!) Ben Affleck makes a good superhero and captures the charm of the Daredevil perfectly. If you don't know what the Daredevil's power is then I advise that you don't find out till you see it. Daredevil is tacky because it is a superhero movie, but it comes very close to stealing "Batman"'s crown as the best superhero movie ever. I'd like to see Spiderman 2 and Daredevil 2 battling it out in a year or two, but seeing the lack of good press this has received I doubt that'll be happening. Still Sam Raimi needs some incentive to make his next Spiderman movie as good as this - what happened to Darren Aronofsky's Batman film? 4/5 |
