Okay we all know the real philosophy problem is to know when you have spent enough time in the library, while keeping up your weekly quota of slacking. Slacking is an important quota of any philosophy students time, but recently I've been slacking a little too well and essays are upon me aaaaaagh! The Philosophy in the Matrix. The best bit of this article is the bit subtitled "The brains in vats and the evil demon". In there is the best explanation of externalism I have read. Read and enjoy! |

Okay, philosophical conclusions so far are as follows: There is no difference between appearance and reality - because the appearance part is the only real part. This is called phenomenology. The existence of God arguments are helpful - because they show how little we can talk meaningfully about God. Terms like omnipotent, omniscient and eternal are so removed from everyday life that trying to make theories based around objects possessing these qualities logical is bordering on impossible. Words are meaningful - whether they talk about anything real or not. Meaning depends on successful application or usage of the words. Meanings are not given to words by anything other than the way they used. Creationists and evolutionists should not argue with each other - because their theories are incommensurable (they can not be compared). Scientific theories are judged as good or bad depending upon whether or not they have a practical use. This is instrumentalism. There is no practical use so far for theories on the origin of the universe. Favourite philosophers: George Berkeley David Hume Nietzsche Don Cupitt Garfield |
