The Carrier
When you come to pick up your newly weaned  Zen baby/babies, you'll need a proper carrier  to make them feel secure, and minimize stress.  Stress originates from abrupt isolation from mother and siblings, a new enclosure, new smells and sounds, movement and bumping, noise and vibration of the automobile.

It should be properly ventilated, so ratties won't be breathing in their own ammonia.  An aquarium with a wire lid is the minimum ventilation standard.

The approximate size should be 12-15" X 10" X 8" high, but not too much smaller.  This prevents them from feeling too confined, and allows them to stand freely if they wish.  A small cage is also OK, but it should be fitted into a cardboard box, especially in cooler weather which is prone to making them ill from draughts.  A cat carrier may not be suitable because the wire spacing of the door might allow the rats to crawl through.

Fill the carrier with cage litter, or several soft cloths,  or fleece.

The carrier will also come in handy for transport and vet visits.  In an emergency (eg. veterinary), you won't want to be blundering around looking for a container, or having to resort to something like a  cardboard box, which will upset an already sick / injured ratty even more.
