Deanne Bray |
Name: Deanne Bray Bday: 14th May 1971, Canoga Park, California, USA Age:33 Bio Deanne was born completely deaf in her right ear and with only profound hearing in her left ear (in which she wears a hearing aid) from unknown reasons (likely to have been german measles). From an early age her parents exposed her to deaf culture which allowed her to be comfortable with her identity. She is culturally deaf and has been since the age of 3. She was trained to lip read aswell as hearing with her left ear and the fact that she can communicate verbally and through ASL leads both communities to question her, the deaf community wonder if she truely embraced their culture and the hearing community wondered why not all deaf people could speak as clearly as she can. She says " i have the worst of both worlds but i do have the best too" She also tries to teach people that every deaf person has a different sitution and background which is why some speak, some read lips and some dont and only sign. Her mother was a teacher and she helped Deanne to become sucessful in academics. Deanne earned a B.A in biology and teaches maths and science to deaf/hard of hearing students. After Sue Thomas F.B.Eye she will complete her masters degree in education. Deanne has many hobbies but by far the most inspirational is her love of literacy. She has started a literacy club called the Little Bookworm Club to help promote the importance of literacy and she loves to read with deaf children. She also gos to many deaf funcions and interacts with deaf senior citizens learning about their stories. Trivia She is married to another deaf actor called Troy Kotsur who has made appearences on Sue Thomas:F.B.Eye as 'Troy'. 2001-present She encourages the cast and crew on STFBE to learn ASL and works closely with the various directors to ensure that her character can see what people are saying. Her favourite quote is an african proverb: "It takes a village to raise a child."
