Coumba Gawlo is a young, but very gifted singer from Senegal. After a couple of albums for the Senegalese public, Patrick Bruel "discovered" her voice for the French audience, a record deal with BMG France resulted in a new album, with among others a remake of Myriam Makeba's Pata Pata. This 1998 album Yo Malé has specifically been recorded to conquer international markets, which seems to have succeeded in France.
Born in a musical family (her father gave her the artistic name gawlo, meaning griot in Pular language, as he predicted a great career for her), she sings on contemporary problems such as immigration and the large Senegalese community in France. Further, she has created an association to give aid to homeless children in Dakar.

Born: 1972, in Thiès, as Coumba Seck
Style: Mbalax
