| Winter is the season for humpback whale watching in Hawaii. From December 15th until May 15th each year, the waters of Maui county become an official sanctuary for the whales. The humpbacks travel to the warm Maui waters every winter, swimming all the way from their summer feeding grounds in Alaska. They come to the warm, sheltered waters of Hawaii to give birth to their young, and to mate, thus ensuring the perpetuation of their species. Once hunted nearly to extinction, the humpback whale now seems to be making a comeback. |
