FOR THE CAUSE

by T'Lin 0101.01

The Promenade was bustling with activity as Captain Kathryn Janeway made her way towards Quark's ... the local bar where she had been told she could find Major Kira. Her goal ... to acquire as much information as she possibly could about the region of space known as the 'Badlands' ... and her sources had said that the Major was the person to talk to on DS9. If anyone here knew about the Badlands, it was the former member of the Bajoran Resistance.

Of course, the question remained, would the Major cooperate ... or did she side with the Maquis in this regard. After all, they were fighting for their very existence, just as the Resistance had ... and the enemy was the same ... the Cardassians.

As she entered Quark's she was slightly overwhelmed. The sound hit her first ... music, loud voices, the cries of 'dabo' ... then the mingled scents of food, drink, and the press of alien bodies. It was all rather disorienting. Kathryn usually avoided this type of establishment ... she preferred the quiet of her ready room ... but it was a necessity.

She made her way to a clear place at the bar, and got the attention of the Ferengi who was mixing drinks. After a few brief questions, and the obligatory drink order, she was told that Major Kira was on the upper level. He gave her a lecherous wink, and offered to direct her there, but she declined, asking for a description of the Major ... after all, she shouldn't be too hard to find, being the only Bajoran Major on the station.

So, with drink in hand, and the barkeeps description in mind, Janeway made her way to the upper level. The tables here were small, but not quite so crowded together as they were below. This was a perfect location for observing the activity below, without being part of it. Scanning the room, she quickly spotted the Major talking amiably with a being of unknown origin, who was obviously not Bajoran, though he wore their uniform.

She approached the table saying, "Major Kira?"

Kira looked up, as did her companion. "Yes." she replied, somewhat distracted, then continued, as she realized who had interrupted her conversation with Odo, "you must be Captain Janeway ... Captain Sisko said that Voyager would be stopping here for a few hours."

"Yes, we have some new personnel that will be joining up with us here, before we head out on our next mission." Giving a quick look to the Major's companion, she then returned her attention to Kira, as she went on, "as a matter of fact, our next mission is what I have come to talk to you about. Is there someplace where we could talk ... privately?"

Kira noticed her look at Odo, and realized she should at least make an introduction. "Captain, let me introduce Constable Odo, our Chief of Security."

"Madam." he said, with a bow of his head.

Janeway inclined her head in return, still unsure of 'what' he was ... she had never seen anyone like him before. She looked from him, back to Kira again, eyes pleading for privacy, but not wanting to offend the Constable.

Sensing her dilemma, Kira gave Odo a slight nod, and he stood, saying, "If you don't mind, I have business to attend to. Captain," he nodded, then turned to Kira with a slight bow, "Major," and left the room.

Kira watched him leave, then motioned to Janeway to take a seat. "What can I do for you, Captain?" she said, as she lifted her mug and took a sip of her Raktajino.

She looked around, still uncomfortable with her surroundings, but fearing she would get nothing for her efforts if she insisted on more privacy, she tried to block out the noise and confusion of the bar, and focus on the woman across the table from her. "I am looking for tactical information concerning the area of space known as the Badlands ... I was told that you could help me."

At the mention of the Badlands, Kira sat back, and regarded Janeway. Obviously, she was going after the Maquis cell that was reportedly using the Badlands as a base. Kira knew intellectually that she should cooperate with Starfleet in this regard ... after all, she had sworn at least partial allegiance to them when she came to work on this station ... but she also had an obligation to her conscience.

The Maquis were fighting for their right to live their lives without Cardassian interference ... a cause that she had spent most of her life fighting for in the Resistance. How could she betray them?

On the other hand, she could no more withhold her knowledge of the area, either, at least not completely. After all, Starfleet knew she was familiar with the area ... they could accuse her of aiding and abetting the *enemy* if she did not cooperate.

Looking across the table, she realized that her dilemma was clear to the Starfleet Captain. She took one last swallow of her Raktajino, and returned the mug to the table, rather more forcefully than she meant to, as she swore. Resigned to her situation she said, "I can show you what to expect in the Badlands ... but I will tell you right now, I do not know where the Maquis base is," and with a sly smile, she continued, "and I probably wouldn't tell you, even if I did."

"Fair enough, I suppose." Janeway smiled, as she saw relief overcome the Major's features. She had decided going into this that any information was better than none ... and if all went according to plan, she would most likely have a signal from Tuvok to guide her to the Maquis base ... she would accomplish her mission without forcing the Major to compromise her beliefs.

"Very well," Kira said, as she realized she would have to talk to Quark. "I will have to make arrangements with Quark for the use of one of his holosuites ... how long will you be on the station?" she asked, hoping she could convince the Ferengi to let her use the facilities without his usual high price ... especially on such short notice.

"Only a few hours ... is there a problem?" Janeway could see the concern on the young Major's face.

"Well, Quark isn't always very accommodating," she said, as she glared at the Ferengi behind the bar, "but I will see what I can do."

"Let me go with you," Janeway offered with a glare of her own, "if he gives you a hard time, I can try my hand at persuasion"

Kira decided at that moment that she liked the Federation Captain.

It took some persuading, and a bit of arm-twisting ... not to mention threats to the Ferengi's sensitive ears ... but Kira and Janeway soon found themselves with a free hour in the holosuite. They broke into laughter as the door closed ... the terrified look on Quarks face being the last thing they saw.

Eyes streaming ... gasping for breath ... they shared a moment of sisterly comradery at the expense of the Ferengi. They found themselves arm in arm as they regained their composure. Janeway had not had such fun in a long time ... usually, she refrained from using her feminine whiles to get what she wanted, but it was nice to cut loose once in a while ... especially when she could share the experience with such a lovely companion.

Kira, never one to fear using whatever it took to get the job done, was surprised to see the Captain in action, and wondered if that was how she had gotten her command ... but then realized that Starfleet would never let her get away with it. She had obviously earned her command ... but she was damn good at using her femininity when necessary, too. She was beginning to wonder what else the good Captain was willing to do for the cause.

With that thought in mind, Kira disengaged herself from Janeway, and called up the computer files on the Badlands. The space in front of them filled with swirling clouds of nebulous gasses ... stars and planets occasionally visible through the distortion of electrical discharges. As the image swirled and changed, Kira explained about the magnetic distortions, gravitational flux, and radiation surges that limited sensor readings to the bare minimum.

She then told of the only route through the Badlands ... and the three planets along that route. It had been assumed that the Maquis base was on one of these planets, however, Starfleet had already checked them out, and discovered nothing.

Then again, they had also lost several key personnel in the process ... Starfleet personnel who had, for whatever reasons of their own, *defected* to the cause of the Maquis ... so there was no telling exactly *what* had really been discovered.

Kira then told of her own adventures in the Badlands, when she was part of the Resistance. Janeway listened carefully, and made note of all she was told. She was mesmerized by the Major, as she wove her tale. She had lived such a harsh life ... Janeway was awed by her strength.

She soon realized that this was no longer about gathering information ... she had all the Major had to offer. It had become something much more profound. Kira had made a decision that would not compromise her beliefs, and by sharing this tale of adversity, was asking for understanding.

Janeway understood all too well ... she, too, knew there were limits to what one could do ... even for a cause. She would not ask Kira to do any more than she already had. Approaching the Major, Janeway placed her hands on either shoulder and pulled her into an embrace, whispering soothing words as she held her close.

The tension left Kira's body, as she collapsed, sobbing silently, into Kathryn's arms. They held onto each other, sharing in the moment of understanding and release. Kathryn held Kira's head to her breast, as she stroked the short redish hair ... she was falling in love with the beautiful Bajoran, although she hardly knew her at all.

She tried to tell herself that it was the love of a mother for a child ... or the protective feeling she had for those under her command. But the longer she held the quivering woman in her arms, the more her body betrayed her. Her nipples grew taught, and a tension grew in her loins ... it had been so long since she had felt this way, she almost didn't recognize the sensations for what they were.

As Kira's sobs subsided, she became aware of Kathryn, and turned her face up to kiss the older woman. It was a gentle, almost chaste kiss, but it still sent a shiver of arousal throughout Kathryn's body, causing her to moan, softly. Kira, sensing her arousal, kissed her again, much more forcefully.

Tongues entwined, hands exploring, the two were soon lost in their mutual desire. Kathryn was the first to pull back, panting, as she tried to gather her senses. // too fast // she thought, as she once again regained her equilibrium.

Kira too, was trying to regain her control. She was usually not so quick to passion, but there was something about this female Captain that awoke all her senses. "Look, Captain," she began, but Janeway cut her off.

"Please, no ranks here," she said with a smile, "call me Kathryn."

"Kathryn," Kira said, as she came up to caress the side of her face. "We're done here ... let's go to my quarters to continue this conversation."

"That sounds like a splendid idea, Kira," she said, as they straightened their uniforms, and prepared to leave the holosuite.

Before they got to the door, Kira pressed up against Kathryn with a hug, and said, "call me Nerys," then kissed her as the door opened, and they made their way through the crowded upper level of Quarks.

As they left the busy establishment, Janeway's communicator chirped. She jumped at the sound, then swore as she realized what was to come ... there was no avoiding it, however, as she looked to Kira apologetically. Hitting her combadge, she said crisply, "Janeway here."

"Captain, you wanted me to notify you when the transfer of personnel was complete. All hands accounted for, and the ship is ready to get underway."

"Thank you, Mr. Cavit. I'll beam up in a moment ... stand by." She shut down her communicator, and turned to Kira, saying, "I'm sorry Nerys ... I thought we would have a bit more time before I had to go." She stroked the side of Kira's face, as she went on, "I promise to stop by here on our way back ... if for nothing more than a few hours of shore leave."

Kira gave her a slight smile, and added, "you never know ... you may need our repair facilities, and have to spend a few days here." Then both got serious, as Kira added, "be careful out there ... remember, the Maquis are fighting for their lives. Do not sacrifice your own in order to capture them."

"I'll try not to." and with a final kiss, Kathryn hit her combadge, saying, "one to beam up."

Kira had just entered ops when Dax asked if she had heard the news. Puzzled, Jadzia had pointed her in the direction of the latest Starfleet dispatch where, emblazoned in bold print across the top of the page was the headline, VOYAGER MISSING, PRESUMED LOST. She quickly scanned the story below, but there was precious little information about the disappearance of the ship.
