STIRRING UP STILL WATERS

by wunderwolfe

They sat facing each other upon a deeply napped maroon rug, with just a candle to illuminate the room. T'Pol stared at Hoshi from heavy lidded eyes not sure why she had agreed to this encounter in Hoshi's cabin. Everything she did these days had a sense of urgency; but, she was above feelings - or had been until her encounter with the meteor field of radioactive ore.

She had been released from sickbay; but would not be allowed back to her regular tasks until Dr. Phlox was certain of her recovery - her mental recovery. He was more than satisfied by her physical recovery; but he knew she would be feeling internal repercussions for quite a while and wished to monitor her mental health before releasing her to full duty on the bridge.

Now her every waking moment she struggled to contain the rampant thoughts that had been flooding her mind. T'Pol snapped clear of her inner turmoil as Hoshi began to chant.

"Ha 'ina 'ia mai ana ka puana ! - Let the story be told !" Hoshi opened her eyes and scanned their search across T'Pol's face.

"I had a relative who played professional baseball many centuries ago. He often told a tale of curses and how they hurt the heart more than they hurt the mind."

Hoshi clapped her hands upon her thighs , marking out a beat for the chant to follow. She repeated the ealier Hawaiian chant with much more emotion poured into each syllable as T'Pol listened with curious intent.

"Ha 'ina 'ia mai ana ka puana !"

A staccato of beats drummed along T'Pol's mind.

"Let the story be told!"

An abrupt stopping of the beat as the last word was delivered. Several heartbeats later Hoshi look upon T'Pol and clearly states "I wish to related an old earth fable that may help you in your healing my friend."

Hoshi pours them each a cup of tea from the pot that sat to her left, bordered by a bowl of citrus fruits and the glowing candle. After offering a cup to T'Pol she takes a small sip from her own cup and settles in for her recital.

"My ancestor played baseball for a National League team that had made post-season play. In their 1st round they played a team that carried with it a curse. The opposing team had not made it to a World Series since a billygoat had been denied attendance to a World Series game many decades before. My ancestor's team felt this 'billygoat curse' gave them the mental edge  to beat their foes; and yet they lost in the 1st round and watched the cursed team take a 3-1 lead in the National League Series - only to lose the league championship 4-3. The curse had finally kicked in, the Chicago Cubs failed to make a trip to the World Series yet again falling to 'The Curse of the Billygoat'."

"To further give proof to the power of curses, there had also been a team in post-season play in the American League that had been cursed ever since they had sold the best baseball player of all time to their division foes. They had made it to the World Series a few times over the decades since; but they had never won the World Series since selling Babe Ruth to the NY Yankees. In this particular year 2003, they also managed to get past the 2nd round; just like the Cubs. But - the Boston Red Sox lost the American League Championship to their most ardent foes: the very NY Yankees that many decades earlier they had sold Babe Ruth to- what irony."

"My distant ancestor says many people across the entire country felt the teams had lost the division championships because of their curses - yet over the years and many more seasons in major league baseball he came to realize one thing. That people will allow themselves to believe in something without any proof; but, sometimes will not believe a fact even when proof is given."

Hoshi sips from her tea and lets a few heart beats pass, reducing her tempo just a bit.

"People will always believe in curses, and the power of prayer, and the existence of love - because they have experienced too much in their lives to make them think otherwise. And their belief in those damn curses hurt their hearts - their love of their teams & the game. Some fans felt so hurt by the power of the curses that they lost their love for a game that had always been dear to their hearts - a little bit of who they were just died that season, because of some un-provable curse."

Hoshi sipped her tea and then became very still, eyes closed, holding her cup in her lap as she centered her focus for the next round of human foible cum-logic.

T'Pol was confused by why curses about some archaic Earth sport were being discussed as she sat pondering her human hostess sipping her tea. Just as she wondered if Hoshi was done, another chant began.

"Ho'ale i ka wai ua lana malie !" Hoshi opens her eyes and repeats in terran "Stirring up still waters !"

She sips her tea once more and places her cup down. Slowly she takes a tangerine into her hands and begins to peel it while she begins her next logic vector with T'Pol.

"Ho'ale i ka wai ua lana malie ! - stirring up still waters !"

"Ha'ina 'ia mai ana ka puana ! - let the story be told !"

"Ku lia i ka nu'u! - strive for the highest !"

"I believe that your experiences from the radioactive ore has left you adrift within yourself T'Pol- in many ancient curses that your people have considered themselves above for many millennia, and now you feel like your very existence is a failure. Your inner feelings are proof positive that you are now cursed by feelings and rampant thoughts you can not control - primitive  emotions plague your mind and you feel alone, racked with guilt over your failure and aghast that you are having feelings."

T'Pol is staring at Hoshi as though seeing her for the first time, scared that her feelings are so clear for another to see.

Hoshi places the peeled tangerine down, leans across and softly takes T'Pol's hands into her own and looks up "I wasn't sure until you glared at me. You are covering this very well T'Pol; but I don't want you to think you are cursed or have failed because you are now experiencing emotions. There is no proof that emotions and Vulcans don't mix, just feable curses T'Pol."

Hoshi looks into the deep brown eyes across from her and whispers "You may even learn to understand Capt. Archer better now."

"I do not care to understand Capt Archer better. I would rather understand you better Hoshi ."

Hoshi smiles softly at T'Pol thinking she has finally found a close friend on the bridge. As she untangles their hands she picks back up the tangerine and breaks it into pieces .

Just as she prepares to offer T'Pol a tasty piece of fruit the Vulcan leans forward and places a light kiss on Hoshi's forehead. A ripple of pleasure rolls over her in quiet delight as T'Pol trails kisses down her cheek, along her neck and into the hollow at the base of her throat.

Hoshi can feel her eyes rolling back in her head as her breathing becomes haggard and a voice eminates from her cleavage, more a growl actually "I have been thinking of this all day since you asked me to your cabin. My regression seems to have left me with a strong need to bond with another; and," a soft rumble and deep breath "I find myself wanting  you Hoshi." T'Pol can't believe she has such feelings, such strong desire for anything - anyone; but she does.

Hoshi leans back and makes T'Pol look at her "I find myself wanting you too T'Pol." and leans forward to claim the Vulcan's mouth with her own .
