Establish a point in line before your opponent begins the  simple part of his  compound attack.
Simple attack, direct or indirect. Zero prep' this is your hardest, fastest action.
Simple riposte or counter-attack. Your fastest, hardest, most direct riposte or counter-attack.
Counter-offensive. Compound actions have an opening into which you can lunge either into prep or with opposition.
Counter time. Show your opponent an opening then pull back to parry his counter attack.
The Tactical wheel is based on an intelligent response to previously employed strategy. Many fencers make the mistake of trusting their opponet's to act intelligently and depending on that. Any action can be defeated by the correct counter-action. But many advanced actions can also be defeated by a completely idiotic counter-attack if not done perfectly.
To avoid this irritating circumstance, begin every bout with simple actions. Start from square one.
By
assuming your opponent will respect your feints, you will lose to fencers because of, not in spite of their inexperience.
Keep your opponent honest. By counter-atacking hard and fast when it is appropriate, you will force your opponent to always be wary of your counter-attack. By waiting for the point to come out every time, you allow your opponent to drift farther and farther from actions that you will be able to defend.
All strategy depends on your lunge. If your lunge causes your opponent to react more than he is comfortable with, you will have the freedom to disengage anytime.

Practice your lunge and recovery every day. It is more important than any other aspect of fencing, more than bladework, more than footwork. The lunge is the vehicle of all fencing actions. If your lunge is powerful, the game of fencing will open itself up to you. If it is not, you will not see the openings you need to employ the Tactical wheel.
Warning: The tactical wheel only comes into play after much training. Strategy begins with simple actions done well.
One cannot effectively employ strategy from weakness.
