This is our kitty, Texas! He walked into our family when he was 8 weeks old. Our neighbors found him wandering in the street and thought we all might be able to find him a home. We decided he could spend the night with us until we could find him a home. It was October and all of the rescue organizations were full and nobody wanted another cat. His fate would be the pound, or worse, if we didn't take him in. He slept on my stomach while we watched tv, and when it came time for us to go to bed he slept on my pillow. That sealed it. We were cat owners. :) Unfortunately we can't have pets in our apartment so off he went to my in-law's house to live with our ferrets.
I was so nervous that he wouldn't get along with the ferrets or that they wouldn't get along with him. I worried for nothing. :) They got along famously...especially Opie and Texas. About two months after we took in Texas, we lost our little girl Dweezil, so she never really got a chance to play with him. I'm sure if she had been younger she would've given him a run for his money. :) Anyways, Opie and Texas are the best of buds now.
This is the first time I've had a cat since I was 4 years old, so with Tex I'm learning. I think I got lucky. He's a very easy going kitten. He likes to be cradled like a baby and have his tummy and chin rubbed. Since he's been raised with Opie he doesn't really know he's a cat...he thinks he's a ferret! He likes to play in his water dish, and will jump into the bathtub after we've taken a shower just to watch the faucet drip. I can't explain his fascination with water.
Texas is 5 months old and he's still very playful (or in other words, hyper) but I have a hunch he's going to turn into a cat that adjusts to almost anything.
May 2004: Texas is a healthy almost three year old boy. He's such a lovebug. You can't lay on the couch without him wanting to jump on top of you for a nap. He loves to play with milk jug rings and will dunk them in his water dish and bring them to us sopping wet. He likes to play fetch with them. I think it's his inner Golden Retriever. :) He still likes to be around the ferrets and will come running when he hears me opening their bag of food. The name Texas does fit him as he's a very large boy now.
