1997 FFL SUPERBOWL

Anorexic Toads - 48

Washburn Wildcats - 28

MVP:  Shannon Sharpe, 38 points

This was our first Superbowl between teams that had BOTH been there before.  The Wildcats had won the first-ever Superbowl back in 1993 against the Gamblers.  The Anorexic Toads had won the Superbowl in 1994 and 1996—and they were trying to become the first-ever REPEAT-champ in FFL history with a victory in this game.  The real story of this Superbowl was the performance of the Toads’ tight end, Shannon Sharpe.  All Sharpe did was catch 8 passes for 162 yards, including a 62-yard touchdown catch.  Sharpe totaled 38 points in this game to break his own 22-point record for tight ends in an FFL Superbowl.  The rest of the Toads team could manage only 10 points.  But as it would turn out, Sharpe would defeat the Wildcats in this game singlehandedly.  The Wildcats did have a shot at a comeback on Monday Night Football--- they trailed by just 18 points and still had Drew Bledsoe & Troy Drayton.  But the Monday Nighter turned out to be a defensive struggle, and the Toads emerged with the 48-28 victory.  Shannon Sharpe was the MVP of the Superbowl, of course…and this was significant because his brother Sterling Sharpe was the Superbowl MVP for the Toads in their 1994 Superbowl victory.  It was the third Superbowl victory for the Toads in the 1990’s and, as it turned out, their final one in the decade.
