WHO QUALIFIES TO PURCHASE A HABITAT HOUSE?
• THE NEED FOR HOUSING due to problems with current living conditions
• THE HOMEOWNER’S WILLINGNESS TO “PARTNER” with Habitat to help in the building of their own home and the homes of others (sweat equity).
ABILITY TO REPAY:
Your total family income must meet the minimum requirements and not exceed
the maximum income limit depending on the number of individuals that will
live in the Habitat home.
Income limits are set according to the HUD Median Income Guidelines for the local
area. Monthly payments are based on a 20 year interest free mortgage and typically
run $250-350 per month. Payments include insurance and property taxes.
Homeowners are responsible for all utility bills and upkeep of their property.
NEED FOR HOUSING:
Your “need” for habitat housing will be based on the living conditions where you
currently live. Overcrowding of bedrooms, structural problems, inadequate utilities,
unsafe or unsanitary conditions, are some areas considered in determining
your “need”. A home visit will be made to evaluate such conditions.
WILLINGNESS TO “PARTNER” AND “SWEAT EQUITY”:
Habitat requires homeowners to agree to work with the Habitat program in the
following ways:
• Provide 300-400 hours (based on family size) “sweat equality” towards the
building of their home and homes of others
• Attend budgeting, new homeowner/maintenance, or other classes as appropriate
• Attend habitat homeowner meetings
• Allow media publicity of you and your family in the program to promote community
awareness and support of the Habitat program
