CHICAGO Join the fun for our 4th "official" FAHSAA Reunion

Dick Bartelt ‘65 has agreed to host our 4th "official" Frankfurt High School Reunion. This crazy and fun journey started way back in 1983 when Gary Sams ‘65 sent out a few letters saying he had always wanted a high school reunion. Two years of hard work and nearly seventy of us from the classes of ‘64 -’67 showed up in downtown Chicago. Judy Dowty ‘66, Terri Brock ‘66 and I were sure we would recognize no one. As we first entered the hotel lobby our strategy was to quietly whisper "Frankfurt High" to anyone appearing to be in their thirties. Bruce Hinkle ‘66, with a quick snap of the neck, confirmed our method. Every five years since then it has been "Back to Chicago" where Dick and Kathy Bates Johnson ‘66 have hosted a great weekend. In the years in between some of us have managed to see each other every summer at our "unofficial" reunions but mandatory business meetings. Kind class members from all over the country have hosted from Nashville to San Antonio, Seattle to Charleston, St. Louis to Baltimore. We’ve covered the USA hoping we would pick up even more alumni with each new location. This past summer Jan Surkin ‘65 was the gracious hostess in a beautiful, sunshine-filled San Diego. Carol Fraser ‘63; Carol Cosentino, Leslie McDonald, and Signe Indvik ‘64; Don Becker and Eric Wolfe ‘65; and Mrs.Betty Latenser, mom of Mary Jean ‘66 and Petie ‘67 were all first timers. Everyone is welcome to join Dick this summer, June 23 - 25 at the Holiday Inn City Center, Chicago. Terry Brennan, Bob Begg, Marti Farley & Bob McGregor ‘65ers; Kathy Bates, Judy Dowty, Lorraine Burch ‘66ers; and Marcia Morrison ‘63 have written they’ll be there. Alaeldin Rachid ‘66 is hoping to come, his brother Ihsan ‘65 who lives in Qatar has written he’s flying in. Now that we’re all in our fifties, you’d think you would take the initiative and show up...so, click here to bring up the mail-in registration form! FAHSAA Prez

THE "KIDS" ARE COMING TOO

Way back in the beginning, the classes from ‘63 to whatever were always welcome at our reunions and business meetings. After we grew and grew, the "kids" from ‘67-‘71 formed their own group. They recently asked permission to join us in Chicago this coming summer. It was given gladly. The youngsters will be staying in the same hotel, the Holiday Inn City Center. We will have separate hospitality suites for the two groups, but everyone is welcome to stop by either one, any time. At this point we will have a combined cocktail, cash bar event before the traditional dances on Saturday night. As the evening continues, it is almost certain that the groups may be merging to rock ‘n’ roll.

SEND CHICAGO $$$$ TO DICK

Our man in Chicago, Dick Bartelt ‘65, has been kind enough to front all down payments for this year’s Chicago Reunion. Dick has put down about $3,000 of his own money because this popular city is looking to be booked big time in this millennium year and would not even talk to us without large down payments. So, if you know you are coming, please go ahead and send in your registration and help Dick out. That’s the reason we suggest on the accompanying registration form that you make your checks payable to Dick. Annual dues may be included in the one check. All will be happy to know our treasurer, Alice, will be getting monthly records and dues checks from Dick. If you aren’t able to come to the reunion, or are unsure at this time, please send your separate dues of $30 to Alice A. Malton (see address on front page).

REUNION AID FUND

If you need financial assistance with your hotel, registration or events at a five-year reunion and have not had assistance in the past five years, please contact Alice Malton for a confidential helping hand. It’s for the asking.

Newlyweds among us: Don Becker to Peggy Peté, both ‘65 classmates. Mike Major ‘67 was contacted by Mimi Venn ‘66 after reading that he had attended the reunion in Baltimore. MINUTES of FAHSAA, Inc. Business Meeting, June 1999

The meeting was called to order by president Sue Milstead Murphy at 10:00 a.m.

Old Business:

  1. A roster was passed around to all those present for corrections and/or additions.
  2. Introduction of officers was made.
  3. After much discussion, it was decided that  rosters will be mailed ONLY every 5 years.  This is due to the cost of printing and mailing.  An up-to-date roster is always available from the Internet (either in Excel98, tab-delimited text, or PDF format).  Anyone needing a printed copy can ask Allen Macklin to send one for the cost of printing and mailing. Changes and additions to the roster will be noted annually in the newsletter.
  4. Because of increased costs associated with newsletters and rosters, and the need to develop a positive cash balance going into each reunion, it was voted on to increase the annual dues to $30. A decade membership was also voted on and passed. For $250 you will cover ten years of dues, resulting in one free year.
  5. It was also voted on and passed to increase the cost of registration for each reunion as it is hard to predict how many will attend and we invariably lose money.
  6. The Alumni Aide Fund was discussed and, according to the By-laws of the organization, can only be used for the Chicago reunions (every 5 years) and NOT for the Annual Business Meetings. It was also reiterated that the fund is to be used to help defray costs while at the reunion, not for transportation, and only for the alumnus.
  7. If registration for the reunions or the annual business meetings are made by the date requested, a reduced rate will prevail. Rates will increase after that date.
  8. Newsletter: If anyone does NOT wish to receive the newsletter, please let us know. Your name will continue to be on the roster, but this will save the association the cost of printing and mailing.
  9. Frankfurt High School T-shirts and sweatshirts are available. Contact Gary Sams.
New Business:
  1. The 2001 reunion will be in #1 New York City or #2 Pittsburgh, PA. It was voted upon and passed to have Barbara Motson Leiser research NYC and ultimately to leave the final decision to the officers.
  2. Reminder: New officers will be elected in Chicago 2000
  3. Dick Bartelt is in the process of finalizing plans for reunion 2000.

GET ONE FREE

At this past business meeting, Steve Downs ‘65 proposed a $250 decade dues membership resulting in one free year. The first to take advantage of this incredible opportunity was Sharon Humphrey Campbell ‘66. Sharon has also helped us to boost our coffers. We felt we had to increase our annual dues for the first time in fifteen years to defray costs of this organization. If you enjoy getting this newsletter and checking out the updated roster, please support us by giving annual dues of $30. Thanks in advance.

NEW OFFICERS

Been looking for prestige, something to do in your spare time, a bit of travel and much, much glamour in the new millennium? Here’s your golden opportunity! All officer positions will be up for grabs this coming summer at the Y2K business meeting in Chicago. Even better: all positions are for a five-year reign. Please think seriously about becoming an integral part of FAHSAA.

So far, Gary Sams ‘65, Virginia Search Chessnoe ‘64 and Susan Milstead Murphy ‘66 have held the leadership helm as presidents. Sue Harlan Alley ’65, past treasurer, secretary and newsletter editor, Al Willett ‘65 and Donna Sill Willett ‘66, past co-treasurers, Hal Corbin ‘65, our pro bono lawyer, and all current officers have given much time and effort to this cause. Please feel free to contact any of us about our roles. One requirement is being able to attend annual business meetings. SMM, Prez

MY CORNER OF THE WORLD

For nearly nine months, my spouse and I traveled cross-country, Idaho to Florida, north to south, trying to decide where to hang our hats. Virginia won out. We purchased a cell phone to keep in touch, we had no house. Lynn Plunkett ‘66 called to say she found FHS on the Internet. When pressed for anyone else, she came up with a set of twins: Mike and Joe Vinci, ‘66ers living in central Florida.

A few weeks after I moved to Richmond this past summer, I was hired to do a location scout for a TV commercial. An acquaintance suggested I see Jane Sisson’s backyard. I had been taking photos for about 15 minutes and started to leave. Jane asked where I was from. I gave my standard "everywhere." "Where is everywhere?" she queried. I lived in Germany. "Me too." I went to school there. "Me too." I attended Frankfurt High. "Me too." I graduated in 1966. "Me too." Jane Price ‘66 was standing before me! And very good news as well: her twin brother, Rick Price, was not deceased as reported but also living in VA. Recently I received a letter from John Sandidge ‘66. He had called Idaho, tried our cell #, both had recently been disconnected. He then wrote to my brother-in- law, an address we had used for business. His sister had seen that the organization "Over Seas Brats" was having a reunion this past summer in Dallas. John attended. Allen Macklin ‘65, our webmeister, saw his name posted on a roster: one more Hanauer and fellow alumni found! Bill Kellond ‘65 ran into Mr. Otis Halliday, FHS math teacher and coach, at a church service where Bill’s wife is the senior minister at a church in Houston. Otis and his wife live in CA and were visiting mutual friends when one thing led to another. Dick Bartelt recently had a drink with newly found John Robinson ‘65. We’re everywhere. SMM

SENIOR PICTURES ON THE WEB

Frank McHugh ‘63 has actually put senior pictures from our yearbooks on the Internet! Just check out his work at http://www.oocities.org/Athens/Thebes/1843. Trina Ball also has some of the classes on her website at http://www.oocities.org/Wellesley/1659/F.A.H.S.html. Pretty amazing! So, if you’ve misplaced your Focus, you’re in luck. NEWSLETTER

Lorraine Burch ‘66, our co-editor, has been wrestling with MS for a number of years. I talked with her just after Thanksgiving, and she has had some rough times this past year, but was doing quite well that day. In the meantime, Jerry Ulbricht '66 and Allen Macklin '65 have helped with this issue. Jerry is our publisher/mailer and Allen takes care of the web version.  This issue, with correct or completely falsified info, has been typed by me. SMM
