Stacy Dragila is a converted hurdler who began vaulting at Yuba College at the age of 29. The late John Orognen saw her as a heptathlete. Back in those days she used her maiden name of Mikaelson, and was good enough to place 2nd in the 1995 Big Sky Conference heptathlon in her senior year at Idaho State.
Her PRs include a 13.88 for the 100 meters hurdles; 5-7 in the high jump; 34-7 in the shot; 26.10 in the 200 meters; 19-1.25 in the long jump; 145-3 in the javelin; 2:18.12 in the 800 (100, 200, long jump were wind-aided) for a total of 5488 points for her heptathlon.
Married to Brent Dragila and coached by Dave Nielsen, she first cracked the 10-foot barrier at a 1994 indoor meet and then progressed to 12-1.5 in 1995; 13-9.25 in 96; 14-7.25 in 97; 14-6 in 98; and 15-1 last year.
In 5 appearances at nationals, she's never finished lower than second, placing 2-1-1-2-1. She is currently ranked No. 1 in the USA and had been among the world's top ten since 96.
She is slated to win the gold in Sydney at the 2000 Olympics.
