Diet Secret
Stop dieting and start eating sensible, well balanced meals and snacks that make you feel good.(or at least as good as one can feel with FM)

Diet Overload
In my family the whole idea of nutrition has always been very important. My father had lost his father and two brothers at young ages to heart conditions so children we were educated about the evils of fat, the necessity for good vitamins and the benefits of exercise. The remainder of my family stick quite closely to the diet we were brought up on. However, shortly after being diagnosed with FM I began to experience a weight gain and I immediately started to do all the traditional cut backs recommended by weight watchers, calorie counters, etc. To my dismay my weight continued to increase and there is only so much exercise that is possible with FM. Although I have enough of a nutrition background to know fad diets are unwise, in desperation I tried the grapefruit diet and even went so far as to try ephedra. Unfortunately I am as sensitive to ephedra as I am to most medications and that was a short lived experiment.
The closest I have got at this point to satisfaction with a weight loss program is the The Fibromyalgia Diet: 40/30/30
This diet was recommended by Dr. Devin Starlanyl, MD in her book Fibromyalgia & Chronic Myofascial Pain Syndrome: A Survival Manual, Chapter 24. The 40/30/30 refers to the proportions of charbohydrates, fat and protein in your diet. The recommendation is that you should have forty percent carbohydrates, thirty percent fat and thirty percent protein. Now to figure out this ratio she recommends the book, The Zone (Sears and Lawren, 1995)and this was helpful to me initially and I was amazed to discover how low my protein levels were. The problem I have with The Zone is that I don't have the time and energy to spend doing calculations so what you will find below is MY version of The FM diet and I am actually slowly losing weight with it. I also usually feel better when I'm following the diet but there are times when pain or fibro attacks are so bad that I finally curl up in a blanket with chocolate and painkillers and wait it out.
