Sunday Territorian headlines - stretching wet stories further than they should go
'Daly set for flood battle'
'Daly River residents sandbagged properties and moved furniture onto roofs last night as the raging river threatened to engulf their homes. The local pub was closed down and an evacuation centre set up outside the town as the community prepared for the worst'. Many roads remain cut including all roads to Western Australia, Litchfield National Park, lots of roads in the centre, and the road to Katherine Gorge. Rain, however, has eased significantly.
More dangers for Territorians
'Crews battle city potholes scourge'
And if it ain't floods, its potholes. From the paper - 'A minefield of potholes on suburban and city streets is causing chaos for Darwin motorists……. The potholes range in size from a golf ball to a car tyre'. Ouch.
'Mould monster rears its head'
And if its not floods or potholes. Ever had those dreams where the walls keep getting closer and closer, the roof feels like its caving in and all life is being sucked out of you? Well for Top End residents it ain't a dream, its monster mould. But never fear we have another marketing wizard to help us. Harvey Distributors chemical sales chief Jim Harding recommends household bleach, ventilation and air-conditioning. A prominent position on page two is his reward.
'Timor quake felt in Top End'
And if its not floods, potholes or monster mould, its earthquakes. Top End residents awoke with a jolt yesterday after an earthquake, measuring 6.5 on a scale similar to the Richter scale, hit 300km from Dili.
'Alice braces for record fire threat'
And if its not floods, potholes, monster mould, earthquakes, its fires. Alice Springs residents face the worst threat of fires in 10 years following the strong growth of grass after the recent floods.
The wonders of language
'Steely reply'
'Long-time Territorian and former CLP politician Roger Steele met someone at Tennant Creek recently that he didn’t know. Thrusting out his hand, he said: "Roger Steele." The chap replied: "Not much, but they gave me two weeks".'
If only Wanderers were in the semi-finals
'Magpie assault on flag'
No bird dropping here. Palmerston moved through to the NTFL grand final after beating the previously undefeated Waratahs by 35 points. Had Wanderers played yesterday, they would have been sure to get their first win given that they set out to do everything Waratahs didn’t for the season.
