Sunday Territorian headlines

First the pits
'Poll: CLP triumphs'

In another amazing political result for the Territory, Sue Carter got more than half the vote (of those who bothered) to retain the seat of Port Darwin for the CLP. Interestingly - almost a third of voters failed to show. Could it have been an absolutely uninspiring choice - an insult to voter intelligence? And speaking of intelligence - the ABC Internet News reported the Chief Electoral Officer of the Northern Territory as saying there had been a high voter turnout. The CLP naturally claims that this vote means that all Territorians support mandatory sentencing (it was their safest seat) while Labor is claiming an 8% two party preferred swing which if repeated over all electorates would result in a change of government. As for this cynic - it is just another intelligence insulting result.

'Teen car 'surfer' fights for life'

An 18-year-old man was thrown from the roof of a car after car surfing in Palmerston yesterday and remains in a critical condition in hospital.

Better
'Soldiers ready for Daly evacuation'

Seventy soldiers were on standby to help evacuate Daly River if the river rose further today. The river reportedly peaked at 14.2m last night. Fifty chemical toilets have been taken to the community if the sewerage system goes under.

A not so bad pit
'Lions on way to kick-start NT colony'

Four ex-circus lions are being moved from Melbourne to Darwin to set up home in Crocodylus Park. The lions are expected to be OK in Darwin because lions come from Africa. Hmm, Africa is a mighty big place with a wide range of climatic conditions - and anyway they're coming from Melbourne.

Something to get you out of a pit
'Who wants to be a millionaire'

The Sunday Territorian has a knack of finding gambling stories to compete with their own Sunday Pool. Sunday Pool involves picking 6 numbers from 30, with a possibility of winning up to $6,000. Meanwhile, the Spot 10 jackpot at Keno has reached $1 million for the first time in the NT. Even though the odds are lower, $1 million is a trifle more useable than $6,000, not that I'd turn back $6,000.

And finally the best reason to visit the Territory - Nature
'Deluge makes the flora, fauna bloom - Outback comes alive with colour and animals'

'Wildflowers are beginning to bloom, ground cover is green and plentiful and animals are crawling out of the homes because of an abundance of food'. Termites up to 15mm have been found with echidnas particularly loving that situation. There are tadpoles in most puddles and birds are doing well and giant stick insects are plentiful. What more could one want?
