Northern Territory News headlines

'Rainy days look set to stay'

'Monsoonal rain caused a spate of minor accidents yesterday - and boosted Darwin's wet season rainfall past the average for February'. And with grey skies lingering this prompted the Weather Bureau to fearlessly predict a further three days of heavy rain for the Top End. Then almost miraculously the skies cleared and we experienced blue skies again. How do they do it?

‘Territorians tired of grubs: Stone'

The ex-chief minister and now Liberal Party national president, Shane Stone, played his cards in the mandatory sentencing row today, describing the criminals sentenced as grubs. And then there was the current Chief Minister warning the UN Secretary-General not to breach protocol by discussing the laws at a meeting. Seems to me like the protocols are in need of revising - a bit like the laws themselves.

'Storm terror: pets facing death row'

The RSPCA has been flooded with animals, following the storms that have occurred in Darwin over the past few days.

'Public car yard 'risk to buyers''

In an amazing week featuring crappy or non-existent legislation comes this story of Consumer Affairs warning people to be wary of roadside vendors of cars. Another job for Parliamentary Counsel?

'Aussie match plan bungle'

I don’t know if it is only me, but I thought that the leaking of Australia's match plan for the first cricket international against New Zealand was intentional. I mean what better way is there of belittling those who may be fragile and encouraging swollen heads in those who may have a bit of pep.

'Alice to Darwin railway plan 'on track''

So the project is facing a(nother) three month delay and won't now commence until July. The director of the Asia-Pacific Transport Consortium was reported as saying 'There had been no significant changes to the timetable in place for the railway's construction. We have always been talking about a contractural close around April and talking about a financial close around May or June'. If nothing has changed and these events are still on time why is there a three month delay? The only question most Territorians want answered is do they have the money?
