Northern Territory News headlines

'Hotel shooting: cops hunt two'

Two armed men held up a bottle-shop last night escaping with an unknown sum of money. As they left for Darwin cemetry they fired one shot into the air. They haven't been seen since. Spooky.

‘Stone quits: by-election'

At least the 'grubs' will be happy that Mr Stone has decided to resign from his seat. So too will a lot of other Territorians. The current Chief Minister announced that a by-election would be held on March 11 and today has indicated that it will be fought on the issue of mandatory sentencing. Does this mean that there are no other policies to worry about for either the NT Government or the Opposition. I don't think so.

'UN will probe NT mandatory law'

So Kofi Annan has promised that the UN will provide Australia with some advice about the laws. However, most intriguing was his quote when asked had he discussed the issue during his visit 'There are reasons why he is the prime minister and I am the secretary-general'. Yes…. go on…

'P… off! Woman foils knife bandit'

In a scene straight out of a milk commercial, a woman customer foiled an armed hold up by telling the robber that she was not in the mood for that today. The man ran off and was last seen heading towards the racecourse.

'Swimmers warned of croc'

Tucked away at the top of page 5. What are things coming to. A large crocodile has been seen at a popular swimming hole at Adelaide River. So swimmers have been warned and a trap baited with dead chickens is being checked regularly. So far no croc and no eaten chooks.

'Soap star author in Darwin hospital'

Autograph hunters are in raptures with Judy Nunn in Darwin hospital suffering suspected appendicitis. Oops that sounds bad - sorry. Apparently not only is she a novelist she also stars in Home and Away. She was to be in Darwin to promote her new book 'Beneath the Southern Cross' but this does seem to be a drastic way to attract publicity. Anyway two thirds of page 4 is the result - undoubtedly more than the book would have got.
