'Man bashed to death in fight'

'A man died at Myilly Point after being bashed in the head with a blunt object during a fight, police said yesterday'. The not-so-savoury side of Darwin rears its ugly head yet again.

'Gladioli in eye: man sues Edna'

A Melbourne singing teacher is suing Dame Edna Everage claiming he was struck in the eye by an errant gladioli at the Princess Theatre last year. The poor man has suffered impaired vision, pain and suffering, shock, nervous anxiety and depression since the incident. Mr Humphries' lawyers however claim the man didn’t keep a proper look out when the flowers were thrown. Kind of like a very lucky door prize if the action succeeds.

'$6.1m win but hubby's out fishing'

'A woman who won $6.1 million in Oz Lotto on Tuesday night can't find her husband to let him know. He's gone fishing'. But he may well be in some serious trouble when he gets back. His wife has asked him to keep his mobile phone switched on in case of emergency. And guess what, when the emergency happens (i.e winning $6.1m) he is nowhere to be found. If I was her I wouldn’t be too worried about the phone or the husband.

'It's oil and gas from people poo'

'A Thai scientist claims to have discovered a process for transforming human waste into valuable oil, charcoal and gas, a news report said yesterday.' The man has developed a prototype reactor that's capable of turning excrement and other waste products into 'bio-oil', superior in quality to crude oil. If successful, it could make a whole new meaning of the phrase people power and certainly change the balance of world dominance. Carn India, China.

'Extra Swan Lake show'
'1.3m visitors to NT: backpackers surge'

First there was Cats and now within the year we have the St Petersburg Ballet to perform Swan Lake for us in Darwin. With acts like these it is hard to think what of any benefits the big cities can now offer. Is it any wonder tourist numbers increased by 3 per cent in 1999 compared to 1998. Backpacker numbers were up by an astonishing 53 per cent. Interestingly there were 198 000 backpackers, however they only stayed 192 000 visitor nights. Where's Pauline Hanson when you need her - please explain?
