'Mum: I don’t want my baby' - page 1

A modern indigenous tragedy. 'The mother of a baby girl abandoned at Mindil Beach said yesterday she did not want the child back because she was an alcoholic… Clutching a can of beer she told the Northern Territory News how she wanted her daughter to return to family south of Darwin. She said "For the past two years I have been drinking a lot of grog. I love my daughter but I am no good for her, one day I may lose her forever."'

'Stunt granny shapes up with the best' - page 3


A 53 year old grandmother from Darwin has signed up for an intensive stunt-fighting seminar. The Northern Academy of Dramatic Arts (NADA) CEO said 'We have never had a stunt granny before'. An interesting twist on the traditional page 3 girl.

'Just not cricket' - page 5

Matthew Engel, editor of Wisden, has resigned after eight years saying he was sick of writing about England's cricket failures. There is absolutely no truth to the rumour he left to write a modern history of Wanderers NTFL club.

'Susan in poll race' - page 4

Today's entrant in the race for the seat of Port Darwin. Susan Bradley, twice ALP candidate, is nominating to give voters an option between the two parties. She was quoted "There is a serious lack of leadership which is contributing to the alienation felt by many". She reportedly identified the construction industry as being in the doldrums with the Government being directionless on such issues. Wow!

'Monsoon rain on way, says bureau' - page 7

Yet another forecast of the monsoon rain to come tomorrow and Monday. Senior forecaster Andrew Patterson was reported as saying words to the effect of 'the rainfall could cause stream rises in the Darwin and rural area'. No really I thought that stream levels fell during rain.

'What's up Croc' - page 17

Thank goodness for science. We have all been suffering withdrawal symptoms with a lack of croc coverage over the last month. A researcher from Crocodylus Park has decided to undertake a study on how long it takes for a saltwater crocodile to digest human bones. The student conducting the study, Paul Weldon, hopes that the study will assist inquiries into crocodile attacks and help lead to the identity of victims. Another one for Dumbfoundland.

'Fancy a bird race' - page 19

There have been several articles over the last few months pointing to the need to rid the Territory of feral pigeons for environmental reasons. However, today we celebrate Jim Kensey and his racing pigeons.
