Northern Territory News headlines
'You flaming beauty - Rings of Fire' - wrap around feature
'It's the torch of the town - 25 000 celebrate' - front page
Guess what - 25 000 Territorians turned up to drink in the Olympic spirite last night at Mindi Beach. 'Entertained by bands, dancers and displays, the good-natured-crowd was also wowed by a spectacular closing fireworks display'. Well they were good-natured when not yelling at others to sit down in front of them so they could get a view. As for the 25 000, the Northern Territory News proves its genius yet again - that’s if you believe that anyone did a count.
'Territory fired up for cracker night
'Territorians will go crackers tomorrow night as fireworks worth thousands of dollars are set alight to celebrate the 22nd anniversary of self-government'. Hardly anything to celebrate.
'Clare off to Greece'
'Opposition Leader, Clare Martin is expected to visit Kalymnos, in the Greek Islands, later this year'. This news prompts a surprisingly vicious editorial on both Ms Martin and Chief Minister, Mr Burke who is currently on a visit to Kalymnos. What is intriguing is the outrage now when no comment was made at the time of Mr Burke's departure. Is the evidence of political bias while appearing to be even-handed.
'Thredbo ruling lays blame'
'Government authorities were responsible for the Thredbo landslide that killed 18 people because they failed to ensure the alpine village was safe from a marginally stable embankment, a coroner found yesterday'. This finding is sure to unleash a full set of law suits against the Government which if they occur and are successful could have very serious repercussions in the Territory where development occurs in many instances without sensible environmental precautions.
