the cure plays in london at the rainbow...

the sound here isn't perfect, but listenable...everything sounds just a bit distant, with a noticeable amount of tape noise/hiss. that said, anything that's listenable (and not taken from a radio broadcast) from before 1985-ish is cool.
pretty decent and listenable, more bass would be nice--but for the most part this has a decent mix.

and the show starts off w/"a reflection" and "play for today" like most (if not all) the shows from 1980...very well rehearsed and tight. "three imaginary boys" appears early on in the set, quite good...simon plays some aggressive bass on it, really going after it.

a standard "fire in cairo" is followed by "in your house," which is good--and another version of "m" that starts w/simon's bass line...

"10.15 saturday night" and "accuracy" are well done, nothing spectacular to note...both win good response from the crowd, and then they play "at night." during "at night" they have some problems w/something (a guitar effects pedal/guitar connection?) that makes some noise for awhile, but everything turns out well...
the more up and moving "grinding halt" comes next, much more lively--so the crowd likes it much more...pretty solid and standard takes on the normal traks here, "boys don't cry" "jumping someone else's train" and "another journey by train" (always cool to have the last two back to back)...and then "a forest" and "seventeen seconds" to close the set--nothing out of the ordinary (robert does add some lyrics to the ending of "seventeen seconds"), but both are good and the overall mood created is kinda cool...and then he says (i think) "thank you, sorry and good night." don't know anything about the "sorry" included there...

the band comes back out for four songs...laurence hits a cymbal, much like the first hit of "killing an arab," but they actually then start w/"subway song," and the crowd can actually be heard singing along w/simon's bass line during the intro. "killing an arab" follows and is a nice aggressive change of pace/feel...robert again says a thank you/goodnight, only to come back for "plastic passion" (good and still aggressive) and then another take on "play for today." robert actually says that they're gonna do it again "cause we can't play it worse than we did at the start," and it's good...the only problem w/the first one was that the mix wasn't quite there--matthieu's keyboards were kinda absent, perhaps he missed them =\

on the whole, this is an ok disc to pick up thru trading--nothing amazing or unique really--but it's good/ok. the sound quality isn't brilliant, but still listenable...just an acceptable recording from the cure's 1980 tour.
