the cure plays the london marquee in 1979... this is one of the earliest (as of june 2001 the earliest) cure live recordings that i've picked up. of course, the sound quality isn't perfect, but for such an early recording...it's gold! the sound isn't that bad really, you can make out most everything and everything is mixed well so that helps...there is some crowd noise (small place) but overall, this is a really good set! the boys start out w/"10.15 saturday night" and are in good shape this night...everything sounds really good, and right into "accuracy." robert introduces "grinding halt" as "the next single...maybe..." "object" is really full of kickin movement, and you can hear both robert and michael doing vocals...they really aren't harmonies or anything, just some added back and forth. doesn't add much really...and then "foxy lady" comes up only a few songs later... robert then says something about the "texas chainsaw massacre" movie (and the central character) in his introduction of "meathook." an early version of "three imaginary boys" is still capable of casting a spell...and it does. "boys don't cry" and "plastic passion" follow w/lots of energy. robert then says something about another next single when introducing "fire in cairo." two live rarities are next, "it's not you" and "do the hansa." the first is really pretty good--good punky performance. and then "do the hansa" complete w/all sorts of messing round...robert singing "disco music disco music!!" and all that great stuff. and then the night closes w/"killing an arab," very aggressive and full of kick--cool and noisy stuff... this one is really a curefan must-have just do to the date of the show, so early on in the history of the cure....and having such rare live songs/performances ("do the hansa" and "it's not you"). just one disc, but well worth having...well worth the time and effort to pick up thru trading--got the cure, get the cure!! |
