Garner

Graveside services with full military honors for retired Sgt. Maj. JP Garner of Anniston will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Anniston Memorial Gardens with Anniston Memorial Funeral Home in charge and Chaplain Tom McMinn officiating. Visitation will be Saturday 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Garner died Thursday [July 5, 2001] at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Garner of Anniston; a daughter, Cathy Garner of Jacksonville; two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Shelia Garner of Pelham and Tom and Zora Garner of Weaver; a sister, Mary Hosey of Savannah, Tenn., 11 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Cress, Roger Thackery, George Murray, Glenn McNeill, Jim Mains and Marvin Counce.

Mr. Garner retired from the Army after 26 years of service that included tours in the Pacific during World War II and Vietnam. He served as Post Sergeant Major at Pine Bluff Arsenal in Arkansas as well as serving in the Philippines, New Guinea, Australia, Hawaii and Germany. Among his many service awards were the Bronze Star and the Meritorious Service Award and selection as a member of The Pacific Honor Guard Platoon. He was also a member of the Wally Byam Caravan Club International.

The family will accept flowers or donations may be made to the National Kidney Foundation.
