The Center for Jungle Warfare (CIGS), was maintained by the Brazilian army in the middle of the Amazon jungle. The Fila Brasileiro has been successfully used by CIGS as an army dog in the jungle.
A complete report has been made on the performance, under the same circumstances, on Filas, Dobermans, and German Shepherds for five consecutive years. In this experiment both mental and physical traits have been given the same equal consideration in addition characteristics have been analyzed. Each breed has its own inherent capabilities and temperament with different reactions when placed in the middle of a hostile environment.
After five years of study, selections were made looking for traits including a good sense of smell, courage, reliability, speed, endurance, power, tracking ability, and good adaptability in the jungle. The Fila Brasileiro was judged as the best dog for jungle work.
The Fila Brasileiro is also being successfully used for some K-9 police work in the U.S.A. He has also performed in prison work, protection, yard patrol, and tracking. The Fila has a great advantage over the Bloodhound because he will protect the handler at the end of the trail.
Filas are excellent guard dogs as they cannot be easily fooled. They excel in protecting warehouses, car lots, construction sites, animals on the ranches, etc.
In other countries, like Nigeria, Israel, and Peru, the Fila Brasileiro has been used successfully for security work. Currently the Fila Brasileiro is recognized worldwide as an outstanding working and guard dog.
Filas also are excellent hunters as they cannot be easily fooled. They hunt wild boars in some countries. Bellow a picture of a Black Fila after hunting a big wild boar in California.
