Digital Cable Filter - FAQ

In the last little while there has been a new development in cable hacking with the use of filters. There is a lot of talk floating around now about these little magic wonders. I will try my best to explain all this to everyone in simple terms to put an end to all the rumors.

These filters come in all different shapes and sizes but for the most part they all do the same job. You would be much better off buying one of the cheap mini sized ones over the ones enclosed in a box. Besides, who wants a suspicious looking box on their TV when people come over!

Now, on to how they work. They are called filters and that's exactly what they do! Filter what? Frequencies. You see, when a movie or event is purchased your box then needs to send that information back to the cable company to bill you. To do this they need to broadcast that information on a certain frequency. While different digital cable boxes may use different frequencies to broadcast this info, it's always broadcasted in the 8-42 Mhz range.

So how do I know which filter to buy? You need to purchase a high-pass filter rated at 50Mhz, this means it will not let anything through that is below 50Mhz while maintaining all frequencies above the 50Mhz level.

Don't Be Fooled Into Spending Hundreds !

Where do I purchase a 50Mhz high-pass filter? There are many places that sell these on the internet, just do a Yahoo or Google search. Just be careful, there are many rip-off artists charging $50 - $100 pretending they are something more than they really are. If your not a dealer and your just buying one for yourself don't pay more than 20 bucks because that's is all they're worth. I bought 10 of them from www.nationalfilter.com but I believe they sell singles as well. Just look around you should be able to find a place, just stay away from the descrambler type places!

The main thing is to be smart about using your new friend. Once your filter is installed, leave it on. A lot of these boxes have a memory of storing past or recent purchases for a period of time. If you remove the filter, the cable company will retrieve your purchases which is the last thing you want. Best thing to do is find out how to reset the memory of your box. Please don't ask me how since every box is different. Some boxes you just need to un-plug for a period of time to clear it while others you press a certain button combo. Once you find this out, your worries are a thing of the past.

ENJOY!
