Sixteen Imaginary Boys

(And one Imaginary Girl)

(Ex-Cures and former associates over the years)

This site contains as complete a listing of Cure members I can find. If you know of someone I've forgotten, let me know please. Current members of the band will be listed in red.

Robert Smith - (vocals, guitars, bass):

Founding member whose lyrics are the key to the mood set by the band's music. Collaborates with others on the
majority of the music. Only founding member left.

Lawrence Tolhurst - (drums, keyboards):
Founding member sacked in March, 1989. His lawsuit against the Cure was defeated in September 1993.

Michael Dempsey - (bass):
Founding member who quit in 1979, after the first album, to join the Associates. Returned briefly to shoot the "Boys
Don't Cry" video in 1986.

Simon Gallup - (bass):
Took over the bass spot after Dempsey's departure in 1979. After the band's 1982 split, joined Hartley in a new band,
Cry, which became Fool's Dance, which broke up. Returned in 1985.

Matthieu Hartley - (keyboards):
Joined in late 1979, in time to make Seventeen Seconds; and quit in August 1980.
Steve Severin - (bass):
Banshee Severin and a lone Robert Smith united to record "Lament" in the summer of 1982. He also made a BBC-TV
appearance with Smith and Tolhurst in March 1983. Never technically a member, he is still a Banshee.
Steve Goulding - (bass):
Formerly of Wreckless Eric's band, Goulding joined Smith and Tolhurst to record "Let's Go To Bed" (1982).
Phil Thornalley - (bass):
The engineer on Pornography, Thornally replaced Goulding in 1983. He quit in 1985, replaced by Simon Gallup.
Derek Thompson - (keyboards):

A member of the Easy Cure in 1977, he returned for a Top of the Pops performance in 1983 and joined full time in
1984. Left in 1993 to join Robert Plant and Jimmy Page.
Andy Anderson - (drums):
Ex-member of Brilliant who joined on drums in 1984 so Tolhurst could stick to keyboards. Canned in 1984 while
touring Japan due to a drinking problem.
Vince Ely - (drums):
Member of the Psychedelic Furs, Ely replaced Anderson for eleven U.S. shows in 1984.
Boris Williams - (drums):
Ex-Thompson Twins member replacin Ely in November of 1984. Williams quit following the Wish tour.
Williams came back for a visit in 2001 to record percussion on the live accoustic version of "Greatest Hits."
Roger O'Donnell - (keyboards):
Joined his fellow former "Thompson Twin" Williams (who replaced his fellow former "Psychedlic Fur") in 1988. Quit
after Disintegration only to return after Wish.
Perry Bamonte - (keyboards, guitars):
Longtime Cure crew member who replaced O'Donnell in 1991, stating that he had never played keyboards in his life.
Played guitar on the Wish tour, then switched full time when O'Donnell returned.
Jason Cooper - (drums):
One of many potential Williams replacements, Cooper joined after recording had already begun on Wild Mood Swings.
Soley responsible for the drumming on "The 13th" which truly gave it a Latin feel.
