SOUTH-EAST-FLANDERS IN HISTORY

1918 - 1965

SECOND WORLD WAR (1940-1945)

On May 10, 1940, Germany invaded Belgium. A daily ration system was introduced, that, as the war continued, became less and less nutritious. Countryside life was relatively bearable. Agricultural production exceeding the production quota demanded by the Germans, were sold at extortionate prices to the starving cities through the black market.

The Belgian economy was redirected in function of the German war needs. On October 6, 1942, a sytem of compulsary labor in Germany was installed.

The number of Belgian civil and militarian war victims reached 81,000.
