The Adventures on Huckleberry Finn
Mark Twain

Questions on the whole story

Mark Twain

His real name is Samuel Clemens. He was born in Missouri in 1835. He was trained as a printer, but he started to write in the newapapers. He loved to travels and he loved the steamboats. In 1865 he began to call himself as a writer Mark Twain meant that the line with the lead weight on the end showed that the water was two fathoms. (a unit of length equal to six feet). The stories he wrote for the papers were often about the people of the steamboats and the river banks.

1. About how far did Huck travel by raft between “Jackson’s Island” and the
Phelpses’ farm near “Pikesville”?

Three kilometers.

2. Why does Huck feel very ”wicked” because he helos Jim to escape from
slavery?

Because he was doing something that wasn’t accepted and he could be
punished for helping somebody that violates the law.

3. How true are the stories about himself that Huck tells to explain things to:

a. the woman near St Petersburg (page 23)
This story wasn’t tru at all. First he is making believe he is a girl, and
then he is talking about a mother and an uncle he doesn’t have.

b. the men looking for run away slaves (page 31)
This story wasn’t true at all. Hes is talking about his family in the
.raft
(mother , father and sister) and about his father is sick with smallpox.
He doesn’t have any family.

c. the people in the log house (page35)
This story wasn’t true at all. He is talking again about his family
.living
in a little farm, his sister running away to get married. He doesn’t
have any family.

.d. the “king” and the “duke” (page 42)
The story is not true. He is talking about his poor family living in Missouri
and that all die except his father, his brother and he and that his father is
living with his uncle Ben and that when they make some money they went
on the raft they have an accident and his father was drunk and die with his
little brother who was only four years old. Once more he is lying about a
family he does’nt have.

What is your opinion of this “stretching” of the truth? Do you approve or
disapprove? Can you give reasons for your opinion?

He lies because if he says the truth they would have caught him and also he
lies and got what he wanted. I don’t approve that he is lying because I have
learn that no matter what, I have to tell the truth, but I do understand why
deep inside Huck is lying. He is lying about a family he always wanted
to have.

He wanted to live an adventure.

looking for adventures to do it. And like his aunt said he is always ...............into something.

5. The “king” and the “duke”

of them using any pretext including God and people’s feelings.
