1st Regiment, United States Colored Cavalry

The 1st Regiment of the United States Colored Cavalry was organized at Camp Hamilton, Va., Dec. 22, 1863. They served in southern Virginia from early 1864 to June 1865, and mustered out in Texas, Feb. 4, 1866.

I became interested in the 1st USCC when my grandfather first showed me the saber owned by his grandfather, Captain Charles W. Emerson, who commanded Company E. Some years later I obtained copies of his military file from the National Archives. I hope to eventually learn all there is to know about the regiment, and make it available to all. Any questions or contributions would be welcome!
