My real name is Phil Abbey. I've been a 'Night Owl' most of my life so I've adopted it as my scouting moniker. Some of you know me but many members are new since I left Port Elizabeth at the end of September 2003. Baloo and Aqua keep me informed on the group from time to time.

At the invitation of Chil and Aqua I arrived on the 1st Walmer scene 21 February 2003 for a Baden-Powell Birthday event. I remember the event as if it was yesterday. I was hooked by the people and programme within the first few minutes and never seriously looked for another scout group to join. I am proud to wear the red-green scarf and be part of this superb group.

Although I am now working in New Orleans, Louisiana, I remain part of the 1st Walmer leadership team as the Webserf working behind the scenes as a resource person.

My scouting C.V. begins at the age of 8 when I joined as a new Cub and has continued in one form or another until the present time. On my last birthday I completed 50 years of membership in Scouting.

I earned the Eagle Scout Award [top award] within the American scouting programme in 1965. I have been a scoutmaster and an assistant in three different troops in America as well as a Lone Scout Counselor in Egypt, Palestine/Israel, South Africa, Iraq, and Ukraine. I also assisted for many years by being a badge examiner and counselor in several locations. Both my sons are now Eagle Scouts in America.

In late 2004 I completed the Scout Wood Badge offered by the South African Scout Association. Wood Badge is the PhD. level of training for adult scout leaders and represents an international standard of training excellence for scouters.

I love to camp and to work with scouts and scouters. They are among the finest people on this earth. A cold, wet rainy day in the bush with scouts and scouters is better than the best day inside.

From Chant - Pagan - R. Kipling

I will arise an' get 'ence -
I will trek South and make sure
If it's only my fancy or not...
For I know of a sun an' a wind,
An' some plains and a mountain be'ind,
...
Where there's neither a road nor a tree -
But only my Maker an' me
An I think it will kill me or cure,
So I think I will go there an' see.

Me!
