History of Leroy Township, Calhoun County

Set off from Athens Township in 1837, Leroy Township is located due south of Battle Creek, (Bedford Township is immediately north of Battle Creek).   The first land in Leroy twp was purchased by Ira Case, but the first settler was David C. Fish.   David's wife, Celia (Seamans) Fish, suggested the name Leroy in honor of their son, Leroy D. Fish, who was their first born son in Michigan.  The two sections were called East and West Leroy because of a marsh that ran through the township.

Some of the early township officials:
Dudley N. Bushnell (supervisor and justice of the peace), John E. Mulholland (clerk), James Wilson (treasurer), Polydore Hudson (justice of the peace), Harlow H. Burdie (justice of the peace), Silas Kelsey (justice of the peace), and Thomas B. Barnum (justice of the peace).

Sonoma and Joppa in Leroy Township were stations on the Michigan Central Railroad.

Note:   John E. Mulhollen was the husband of Olive W. Millard.
